So i have this problem-when reaching certain speed(50-&up mph)my steering wheel and shift knob start to shake violently. Its not that i cant controll the car,but the shake is pretty bad.I went to my mechanic and after inspecting the car ,the only thing he found was shot tension rods bushings. So my question is: i know i can get whiteline bushings for $50,and he quoted me $100 for installation.I also have the option of buying these http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.php?t=58584&highlight=rods
and paying $40 for installation, which is about the same pricewise. What i want to know which option would you suggest to me,the car is my daily driver, but i drive it a lot and kinda hard,i also live in los angeles and the roads are fuckedup here(i also plan on using the car for atox in future).Thanx for all replyes in advance :hsdance:

$40 to install tension rods? wtf? They're held on by like three bolts. If you're worried about the cost of things install them yourself.

I'd suggest buying the tension rods instead of just the bushings if you planned on doing hard driving.
I've got whiteline bushings, and like them.

Even with no mechanical knowledge putting in t/c rods will take 30 minutes tops. All you need is 17mm socket and a 17mm wrench. Righty tighty, lefty loosey. All you need to know.

Usually a machine shop will do it for around $10. Just take them out, get a ride to get them pressed in, put the new ones in.

Your tires might have lost a weight that was used to balance it. If the t/c bushings don't cure it look into getting them balanced again. Also, check to see if your tie rods are shot on the end. To check just turn the wheel all the way to one side, check, then do the other.

It could be warped rotors or goofy brake pads since it happens during brakeing.

i dont think its tires-they are almost new,and i actually rotated them 2 days ago.Tie rods are about 5 months old.Im pretty sure its the bushing, since my mechanic showed it to me while the car was lifted(looked fucked to me).

it happens during high speeds, but i will check rotors/brakes

Well if you just rotated them you might have accidentaly knocked off one of the weights.

$40 to install tension rods? wtf?
As quoted from his mechanic, not one of his 240 buddies. That sounds about right considering most mechanic's labor rates.

But that doesn't change the fact that any knucklehead with some jackstands and a socket set could install them on his own car for free...

ive got the powertrix tension rods. i went to my uncle for advice. left with about $300 of snap on tools and it was supposed to be cake. then hes like wait are those adjustable? then he said i would need a front end alignment. he said i could do it but i would eat up my tires. hey, i dont argue with my uncle. he has 16 years with nissans. so then he tried to tell me that 240s DIDNT HAVE tension rods. they are "stabilizer bars". so now i have a beautiful set of tension rods oh wait, stabilizer bars sitting in my garage that i cant do jack with until tuesday. *sigh* but if you do it yourself.... a breaker bar would help. them bitches are tight

my uncle was telling me that if i didnt get adjustable rods they work do what ever they can to get the alignment right. as in pull the frame to one side, hammer it, pound the shit out of it in order to fit right. but i wouldnt think you would need one but dont take my word for it

If you're using the whiteline bushings then you don't need an alignment. Although, if it has been a long time since your last one then you might want to anyways.

They are tension rods.

Your uncle is right though, you'll need an alignment afterwards.
Factory rods have a little adjustability in them, so don't worry, they won't be pulling your frame or beating your shit out with a hammer. I doubt most alignment shops have frame pulling equipment anyways...

thats true salty. the only reason he said there was no tension rods is because i was trying to explain what they were over the phone so when i drove to his garage, hes like oh, those are your stabilizer bars but he still wasnt sure because he didnt know exactly where the part when on the car because they look completely different from stock.
