Where can you find sub $500 cars?

I am looking for something that might run couple of months hopefully for under $500 and seems the only place I can find them is either really lucky on craigslist, or if I roll to downtown San Jose Area to the ghetto-villas. Is there anywhere easier or safer to find a cheap ass car? I don't really have any connections as far as used cars go, and the damn used car lots are trying to whore out a early 90s Geo for like 3 grand. I really need to get something to mob around in on a daily basis so I can spend more time on a paintjob and motor project and get it done right instead of trying to drive around a half primered car with no glass and a smoking motorset.
