WARNING: not the most interesting thread ever! but i will continue to upgrade this chassis as much as my pocket allows me to!

I've been a member of zilvia for a few (3) years now. I'm finally coming around to making a build thread. bare with me. it's nothing too fancy.

i got my s14 off of some local military dude, bone stock 5 speed with 95,000 original miles. it was a four lug with sun roof, vlsd, clean dash and cruise control. only "mod" it had was some shitty ass dual pipe fence exhaust.

this was how it looked when i had just picked it up.

The dude i got it from included some function and form coil overs and a z32 brake swap.

i drove it around for a while with the stock four lug wheels. i threw on the f&f coil overs just so it wouldn't be so stock looking.

i had just started working on an ambulance when i started saving up. i got hired at a local hospital to work the emergency room. this meant a lot more income than working construction and the ambulance combined.

i had saved up and got mb battles (17x9.5 +15 all around with yokohama s drives) and took it to a local shop. once there, they installed isis links, brakes and 5 lug swap.

Once everything was done at the shop i headed down to pep boys, where i met my buddy danny thats been doing my alignments ever since.

It was such a sketchy drive. the toe in the rear was off! i remember not being ably to go over 25mph without it wobbling around.

At this point in time, i was very happy with where my build was at. I thought drifting was silly and time attack was kind of hard core and i wasn't trying to build either style of car, i just wanted a cool looking s14. everything changed when i met these guys.

justin (frisky nipples) ninjo, julian (juice) alex (drama) bryant (joto) all took me under their wings and guided me away from the #hoonigan #stickerbomb life and showed me what real drifting was all about! constant rainy nights at "the spot" really helped me learn how to control my underpowered ka, vlsd with stock angle.(best way to learn)

so after hanging with my newfound brothers, some mods had to come along.

i got my hands on a 330mm nardi deep corn, work bells hub, nrg quick release and hub lock with burnt titanium baller bolts here on zilvia for a really good price so it was a must!.

he wasn't able to ship a bumper out to me because of EMS's regulations, so i had to source one else where! fortunatly i was able to get a bumper with grill for cheap!

so while all my naval pieces where collecting dust in the garage, i ordered pbm subfrime raisers, pbm drift button, DIF solid diff bushings and a tome technical trax two way diff! man oh man does that diff make a difference!.

breaking in the diff was way too fun! after i was able to gather up funds, it was time to slap on the navan and color match the car! i wanted to keep the car red but i wanted to change it up a bit. i selected a red i thought would look cool but when spraying it, the hue completely changed (the color chart lied to me)! i didn't like it at first, then grew on me, and now i hate it! haha oh well paint is coming soon(again)! but back to this paint job.... my uncle is a hell of a handy man! from carpentry, metal work, and mechanics, he does it all(and well). when i found out he was doing an apprenticeship for a local body shop, i hit him up to see if he was willing to help spray my car! without hesitation he said yes! here are some pics of prep and paint.

so once all the prep was done we sprayed it down with some primer...

yes we did prep and spray the car outside. it was both our first time painting a car and didn't really care to go to a booth. it was a nice still day so we went all out. quality came out damn good for a backyard special.

we parked it in his garage and applied heat lamp for 2 days.

once all was said and done, the unthinkable happened.....

once it started raining, we started driving around, water whippin and what not. me being new to drifting, i was always tense starting up and slowly working myself down to being more relaxed. once i started feeling comfy i took my eyes off the car in front of me for a split second BAMMMMMMARGERA.

my buddy slav spun out in front of me in his s2000. i ended up hitting him on his rear passenger quarter panel/wheel. his rpf1 took most of the impact. i remember looking at his car when i was still in the drivers seat thinking to myself "wow nothing happened to his car! hopefully mine looks the same". YEAH.......... not at all. my car absorbed all of the impact.

i was so heart broken. i had just painted the damn thing and now this... luckily i was able to source a new hood, headlights and radiator support the next day.

i pulled off the old rad support and welded on the new one after it sitting in my garage for about a week.

once all the spot-welds were all welded up, i put the fenders, hood and headlights back on.

so ka took a shit. it turned out to be a short in the lower engine harness that would drain my battery. i found some dude up in lubbock texas that was selling his s14 sr20det and was willing to knock the price down if i took him my ka. he was aware of my issue with the harness so he knocked off a couple hundred bucks, so i pulled the ka and headed north!

i found a coil pack locally for 15 bucks, drama hooked it up with a spare z32 maf he had sitting around (thanks blood!), and i ordered a new oil return line along with DIF turbo lines.

after all that bullshit, my car was finally ready to drive! going from a shit ka to sr was such a good bump in power! i tossed on a pam knuckle kit i picked up from a fellow zilvia member. increased angle and boost made the car so much fun!

oh and i had also installed isis 3 inch boas pipes. I sited with this because at the time i didntwant to pay 700 for a dart izumi i tried to get from another member.

shortly after the swap i came up on a pair of equips(18x10 +22). i figured if i got a pair it would make me want to find another pair of equips. i never found another pair in good sizes so i decided i would mix and match with something else. i ended up finding a pair of work xt7's (18x9.5 +12).

Thank you! I have a good red I'm leaning more towards, but just when I think I know I want a certain color, something pops up and makes me question my choice! I'll never polish another set of wheels ever! It's such a pain to maintain. Local chrome shop won't touch wheels anymore so I think powdercoat chrome is going to stay for a while!

Thank you! Unfortunately I'm fedup with this color. I need some change! My intentions have been to keep the car as tasteful as possible. Nothing too over the top but quality for the most part! This year should be a better one. I'm trying to get the car out to as many drift events as possible!

Alex (drama) pressure washed it for me and got all the gunk out! Said it looked like coffee was in the water haha

I let it dry for 24 hours and got some duplicolor vinyl and fabric in gloss black.

car looks good man i dig it. and next time you want to paint outside just a tip, spray the surrounding ground area with water to keep some of the dust from getting to the paint. The water sticks it to the ground and keeps your painting area clean.

Just got back from Albuquerque New Mexico! We hit up No Coast Bash and watched he formula d pro am dudes throw down! It was a great weekend with the homies! Justin killed it in his s13! Excited to see him paint it and throw a kit on it! He's going to rule the interwebz when he's done! I said it here first!

The car handled very well! I had a loose hose by the throttle body that was letting coolant out. on the way back my cars temp rose dramatically! Fixed the lines, put in more water and drive back without any issues! Thanks to drama and justin for the help!

I got a lot of thumbs up driving around Albuquerque and at the event! I felt kinda cool! I had 3 girl come up to me and tell me how they wanted to build similar looking s14s lol! It's super awkward being one of maybe three cars that were all one solid color!

Recent update. Thought I was making progress on my car and BAM, not this time buster.


So a week a go, I got my gktech fan that I was waiting on. I had recently purchased an OEM shroud and sourced a fan clutched from a good buddy of mine. I went from flex-a-lite fans to clutch because one of the fans seized up. Friend I bought it from had it on his stock KA rad. His radiator blew up and leaked water on to the E-fan motor. It rusted up so bad, it stopped spinning. Gktech fan pulls 40% more than stock fan and the fan shroud makes a better seal than any e-fan shroud would seal.

I filled the rad with distilled water and "royal purple purple ice"

So when I was bleeding out the coolant, I noticed bubbles kept coming out (after 30 minutes of bleeding). I figured it was a leak in a hose by the intake, so thought to myself I would search for it and replace the hose. Drove the car around and okachan 'sensor type' marked 69 C the whole time. Highest it went up to was 72 C! So I thought I was golden and ready for the drift event at ASR in Deming NM. Yesterday I drove around and water temp started creeping up to 90-110 C so I parked the car immediately. Started it this morning and POOOOOOF. Big ass white cloud of smoke. I pulled the dipstick out and cleaned some of the oil off to find this...

So I pulled off the valve cover and cams. I was going to check the torque on the ARP head studs, but then got persuaded to just change out the head gasket. Might as well, everything else is already off.

Small update. This year has been one for the books! At the beguining of the year I started working out again (lost 40 lbs), a long term relationship came to an end (almost 9 years), broke the engine on my car, met my new girlfriend and currently having a blast, and most importantly started school to finish up Paramedicine!

So around Valentine's Day, I attended a drift event in Deming New Mexico. Car started running weird and water temps started creeping up. I stopped driving it on the track and packed up for home. Turned out I blew the head gasket AGAIN. Shocker. So my car was running lean cuisine, causing detonation which pitted the head and block including some of the cylinder walls.

I installed the bracket and snugged it all down. I realized that you have to bolt the shifter on from the bottom first before you bolt it up to the transmission.

Oh shit! I didn't read that on the back loll! It's worked well on mine and my buddy's car! Filtered water will cause mineral build up, that's why I've always used distilled. And so far my radiator hasn't had any of that white mineral build up.

Yeah I didn't know if it would've affected the engine in any way, but if it's worked well before I'm sure it's just a precaution they want the buyer to take. I just realized you're from Texas, so I see why you'd use it lol.

So to add a little insight to my last “busy” post. Some of you might know, I’ve been a full time employee and student recently. I recently became a paramedic after putting it off for some time. I’ve worked at one of the busiest local Emergency rooms (level 2 trauma facility) for the past 7 years. That journey recently came to an end, when I decided to leave the hectic environment, and chose to pick up a part time job at a local micro hospital ER. I did this so I can go back to school full time so I can get my BSN. Between all this stress with switching jobs, my medic license, and being tight on cash, I put the s14 last on my list of things to do. Now that I have more time to wrench, I hope to finish this up within the next few months. WITH ALL THAT BEING SAID....

Finally, I got some work done. First and foremost, I have to thank my boy Justin for always lending a helping hand! Fucker always comes through when I need advice, clarity, and a second set of hands.

A while back I had finally installed my Maverick Motorsports adapter plate to the engine. I originally used the Z33 carrier, pivot ball, fork, and SR20 TOB. When We put it all together, the TOB would barley make contact with the pressure plate fingers

I got super frustrated. Justin and I started searching threads and forums to see what could be done about this. I had so much information at one time, I ended up mixing up all the info we found. IDK where is thought I read I’d need a z32 pivot ball, but I ended up ordering that and a brand new SR TOB and carrier.

Last night I separated the trans from the block, installed the z32 pivot ball, joined the SR TOB to the carrier, installed that and mated the trans back to the engine. This was where the fork sat. It was extremely tight. No wiggle room whatsoever.

So then Tin and I separated the trans from the engine AGAIN, and swapped out the z32 pivot for the z33. We put it all back together and ended up with this. Finally.

So I need some advice from you all, the community.

I’ve been contemplating on tubbing my engine bay and relocating the fuse box either to my glove box, or under the airbag tray on the dash.

Some of my buddies are telling me just to leave it as is, but I would enjoy having that clean look.

I need to paint the bay before I drop in the engine (obviously) and I just wanna know which way you all lean more towards. Pointers and tips always welcomed!

Finally, a step in the right direction.

School and work is still kicking my ass. I thought the change in jobs was going to relieve some of that stress. NOT. ONE. BIT.

I called up a good buddy of mine a few days ago. He's a mechanic and a fabricator. I will be taking my car over to his shop in the following week to prep the engine bay for paint. after the bay gets painted, he will be dropping in the engine for me and buttoning up whatever else may need addressing. Im extremely excited! Can't wait to have this piece of shit back on the road.

Im happy with the way it came out!

Previously, i was debating on wether i should tub my bay or leave it as is. i decided to clean it up and leave it as is. Going over my "repaired" rad support, Joe decided he'd re-weld everything back on.

"I'm glad you did such a crappy job at welding your radiator support back on, it makes it that much eisier for me to remove" -joe. lolololol. FML.

We decided on making the rad support detachable for ease of future engine pulls. Here are some pics of the patch work.

Everything is lining up perfect now! Joe has a great eye for detail. Super stoked hes on this project.

He'll be stitch welding the rest of the metal joints and reassembling the front so we can take it to paint on Monday! After paint, we'll be tossing in the SR FINALLY!

I spent a day off with joe 2 days ago. one thing i had asked him for was a removable radiator support that still maintained structure and integrity. it took us the entire day to do, but we got it all figured out.

Like an idiot, I chopped up my old rad support for my Parts Shop MAX high mount intercooler. I cut way more metal off of it than i needed, which made the horizontal part of it very flimsy. Luckily i was able to source a complete rad support locally for a very reasonable price.

Joe re-welded all the outer components of the support, utilizing the old pieces. We then measured up the new support to mark it for cuts. we got it all cut up and mocked up to figure out the situation.

Joe ended up using 16 gauge sheet metal to create a box on the ends of the center portion of the rad support. he welded the pieces up and spot welded them in to place.

After we got it all propped up, I test fit a piece I've been very excited about. I had hit up Clayton Kyle over at Fine Arc Precision Welding in Tucson Arizona for one of his aluminium fan shrouds. I've been sitting on this piece for 2 years now. Stoked to finally be able to run it in a decent looking engine bay. i mocked it up to the Koyo rad with some clamps to mark it up for the mounting tabs. here are some pics.

This thing is STURDY! Joe did an amazing job at fabbing this up for me.

I should be getting the car back tomorrow. I'll have it taken back over to JS Fab for the engine drop in and should have the car up and running in a the following week or so!

Any Sr masters here?! When I drive my car it sputters under 3500-4000 but under boost it pulls fine. Idle also stays at around 1100-1500 RPM. Switched my z32 maf and still does it, timing is good, coilpacks good, adjusted idle and even disconnected the injectors.

Some thread point to CTS, some to maf, some to o2 sensor. I’m stumped

A buddy of mine was having this exact same issue recently, high idle and a bad sputtering in low rpm. I had a spare CAS he swapped it in for shits and the car ran fantastic at a recent drift event. Give it a shot if you can borrow a CAS!

Hmmmmm interesting. I’ll give that a shot. My buddy has his off the car right now. I’m trying the CTS and igniter now. Gonna try a third maf as well. Thanks for this dude! I’ll let you know what happens

So we switched out igniter chips, coil packs, MAFs, disconnected O2 sensor and CTV solenoid, checked TPS and CTS with multimeter, and everything was fine and didn’t change the way the car idled or the break up around 2000 RPM. I’m gonna try the CAS today. I also found one locally Incase that is the issue. Fingers crossed. IDK what else to check.

Finally getting around to updating this post-Final Bout failure. Im going to continue through the updates prior to leaving for Houston, Event, and post event.

Im warning y'all now, IM A FUCKING IDIOT.

So shortly after my last update, I took the engine over to Joes shop.

All the brake lines were back in place, rack/crossmember, new GKTech tension rods, sway bar bushings, and tension rods were all on.

So a few of the changes that needed to be made were the HKS actuator placement, PSM Cobra down pipe trans mount location, and the mounting location of the PSM HMIC and length of piping.

First up is the HKS actuator issue. For some reason, my actuator and turbo wouldn't agree with each other. The bracket for the original actuator pushed the actuator away from the center of the turbo, causing the actuator rod to be angled very awkwardly. To address this, we bent the rod on the HKS.

The only downside to this, is that i cannot adjust the actuator length as easily anymore. i have to disconnect the rod and twist the end in and out, rather than having 2 10mm nuts tight on each other.

also forgot to mention i had that 90 degree elbow welded on to the turbo. Justin had an issue where he kept blowing out couplers at that very spot, so he had it extended on his s13 as well. No more issues since, so i did the same.

After the changes made to the turbo, it was time to bolt up the down pipe.
FIRST THINGS FIRST. In order for the Cobra DP to fit in conjunction with the Maverick adapter and CD009, you have to grind some material off the bell housing and adapter plate as seen below. IT WILL NOT BOLT UP without a grind.

I thought I had better pictures of the grinding job I had done, but no dice.

Once the DP was mounted, we measured up the location for the transmission/exhaust mount PSM has on the lower end of the DP. One the SR transmission, it bolts up perfectly (obviously) and keeps the exhaust from hanging low. This was a feature i was hoping to retain with the CD009. As much as it pains me to destroy really nice welds, we grinded off the beads without taking off too much material from the rods.

In its original position, the bracket hits the GKTech transmission crossmember. it needed to moved back exactly one inch (IIRC).

I don"t even have a picture of it all mounted up together. Take my word for it, Joe did a really good job getting that exhaust to tuck all the way up with the CD009. One of the rods is much closer to the flange, so bolting up the exhaust is a little tricky, but still achievable.

Next up was dropping the engine in. Known fact: you have to shave down the bell housing, as well as bang in the transmission tunnel so the transmission fits. this is what the bell housing looked like after.

After killing my shoulders with the mallet in the tunnel, the engine finally fell into place. Loving the removable rad support. That shit came in clutch as fuck.

With the engine being in, Joe and i began to discuss moving the PSM HMIC forward to avoid any heat-soak with the radiator being in direct contact of the IC. we cut the tabs off of the sides and moved them forward approx. 1 inch or so. With that adjustment, we had to extend the IC piping.

After some mocking up, we had a general idea of where we needed everything to be. Having the Taarks PS relocation bracket helped clear up plenty of room for the new intake piping path.

Once everything was bolted up, I mounted up the Amazon Transmission oil cooler for my PS fluid. You can see it under the IC on the picture above this.

Since all the Fab stuff was done, it was time to bring the car back to my parents house to get it running under its own power. This is where my "brilliance" shows. haha.

So once the car was Back in the garage, I added fluids, buttoned up all the odds and ends, and connected the engine harness.

We were able to get the car running, but the car had a really rough idle and it was running STUPID lean. We checked the CAS, TPS, timing, fuel system, Injectors, and couldn't figure out why my my car was running so lean. Thinking i had a leak on the cold side, i took apart the intake manifold, replaced metal gaskets, and checked the fuel rail for leaks. turns out i had a fuel leak on a few of the injector seats. ordered the parts and replaced hoping this would help.

With Final Bout being less than a few days out, I got a hold of Martin (RS Enthalpy) and overnighted my ECU to him for a retune. we were thinking if he increased the fuel percentage, it would fix the lean issue.

One of the local homies had a ECU that was compatible with my car. i was able to load up the car with that ECU on to the transport trailer. Off to Houston they went.
