View Full Version : OMG my car is so slow
Okay here's the problem, a friend of mine has a 96 V6 mustang, that's 150HP in a 3069 lbs car, it's pretty slow, i got an s14 a couple of days ago, so my friend asked me if I wanted to race, so i said sure, i was pretty sure i could get him, after all my car's got 155hp and weighs ~2700lbs (base model), I knew he was going to get me off the line because both our cars are auto and he has more low end torque, but i figured i would catch up to him at the top of 2nd or so, well, i didn't, in fact by the middle of third he was like 3 1/2 cars in front of me and he was still pulling, i tried power braking it and releasing the brake at ~2200RPMs, i tried going full throttle letting the tranny shift at whatever rpm it wanted, i tried playing with the gas pedal so it would shift at like 5900-6000 RPMs, everything, and the outcome didn't change, my car is stock and all he has is some cheap universal muffler, also a few weeks ago i raced him on my old 95 Del Sol S (SOHC, non-VTEC, 103hp and 98lb-ft torque) i got him bad off the line (mine was stick his is auto) he caught up little by little every time I up-shifted , then, when I shifted into 4th he was still in third so he passed me, not by much tough by the end of the race my car's front wheel was next to his rear wheel, according to carstats.com both cars run around 17.1 Sec. 1/4 mile so i knew it was gonna be close, so i don't understand why he won this time, and by so much, i should have at least kept up like with my del sol, after he got bored and left, i measured the 0-60 in a shitty 9.83 sec., WTF, my del sol did it in 8.3 sec. With 98lb-ft of torque at 5000RPMs, so i’m wondering, is there something wrong with my car? or is it supposed to be this slow? Any one raced a 96-98 Stang stock Vs stock, auto Vs auto, who won? I’m going to see if there's anything wrong with my car tomorrow, is there anything in particular i should look for?
One more thing the gas pedal was sticking so i cleaned my throttle body with carb cleaner earlier today, could that have affected the car in some way.
PS. the car runs fine, no ticking, no hesitation, no nothing.
I'd really appreciate any help, and please no flaming about street racing, i know what i can get my self into, plus i’m racing in an empty street.

my ninjas... they'll hook you UP!
LoL. A v-6 stang doesnt have 150hp...it has 220 IIRC. BTW, my brother raced a V6 stang, and he lost. He had intake, exhaust n short shifter at the time. Didnt lose by much, but still lost. You must think a 240 is a badass fast car eh? in stock form, its not very fast. Faster than a stock civic ex or neon, but not a v-6 stang.
mmm, i was kind of serious about this but i guess some of you guys have your heads too far up your asses to realize that.
ICKY. no i don't think a 240 its a badass fast car, i know its slow, but i expected it to be faster than a V6 mustang, after all it does have better hp/weight ratio, oh and, speaking of power, either you're joking or you don't know shit about mustangs, here read this....

Wrong board to post things like this on. If your serious about the car and the power issues do a search it will yeild MANY MANY results without the hassles. The car is no way a badass fast car but it can be if built correctly.

car lose horsepower over time due to wear, do depending on the condition of the vehicles that could matter. secondly, that the manufacturers rated hp. 155 is what they tell you. if you buy a brand new car, and dyno it, it will be much lower than the manufacturers hp rating. third, auto takes alot out of a car. i suggest a 5 spd conversion if you plan on beating a v6 stang.

thats weird...when i first got my car i thought i was a badass and raced a V6 stang twice. beat him pretty bad both times. drag racing is stupid and boring though.

you got to be shitting me! v6 stangs are slow. i cant count on both hands how many of them i smoked and all im pulling under hood is i/h/e.
if you have a stick and you cant pull a v6 stang you are a very shitty driver. oh and the first kill i made was with just an intake. but :gives:

So were the thousand users before you that posted nearly the same type of thread.
If you want the 240 to be competitive, it can't be stock. More power = more faster. More money = more power. More money = more faster.
Go spend 8-10g and be in the 12s.

Somethings wrong then... i have a sohc auto and its slloooww! i still beat several v6 mustangs and camaros. a buddy of mine has a 02' v6 stang and has an generic intake and a 2.75 inch dual flowmaster catback and its a 5spd... and i still had him at least a half a car length every time we race...

You're missing the point, i'm not trying to make my car "conpetitive" or really fast, i don't race regularly, i was just doing it for fun, the problem is i should have won or at least kept up, but i didn't, so i think that there might be something wrong with my car, hell, even he thought that i wasn't tring or somenthing, so i was looking for some advise as to what could be wrong, and i wanted to see if anybody had raced in similar conditions.

C : s14 is about 2700lbs CURB WEIGHT. + fluids, driver and whatever it tops 3000. and you're running automatic? no chance.
you want your car faster stock? take all the garbage out of it and swap to a 5spd transmission.

C. i got a 97SE with a 5 speed and compaired other motor/wieght is not the best. We got the biggest 240 and it shows you need the 5 speed swap first before anythings besides tune up if needed. I have driven few auto 240sx should have not every been made just fact.

S14 with automatic = ~2900lbs and runs ~9 second 0-60 and high-16 second quarter mile...
With I/H/E I was able to run 16.6 @ 84mph...usually I ran in the high-16 range, though.
Bad auto gearing + heavy + only ~155HP = slow.
Now, compare to a stock 5-speed 240SX = 15.9 @ 87 or so...still kinda slow, but OK.
It's no wonder a Mustang killed you..even with their lower HP...they have +200ft/lbs at ~2750rpm...which will win a drag race.
You make 160ft/lbs at ~4200...
Sucks for you..swap to 5-speed!

150 hp, 215 tq, little bit heavier.... LOTS more torque than you. jeez, and those things are horribly slow.
oh well, back to my S13 sub 2600lb 5spd :)
hehe
Okay, I KNOW THE CAR IS SLOW, what i don't understand is why he had more that 3 car lengths on me when he couldn't get a full car on my Del Sol, and the Del Sol has like no torque at all, it's only 98ft/lbs at 5000 RPMs, below 5k it has less than 90 AT THE FLYWHEEL, and the gearing isn't that good, now i know what you guys are going to say, "its light" yea, it is but look at this....
____________Weight____HP______lb/hp ratio
Del Sol_______2295_____102_____22.50
Mustang_____3077______150____ 20.51
240sx_______2800______155_____18.06
As you can see the Mustang has slightly better lb/hp ratio than the Del Sol which is probably why he won that time but the 240 has better lb/hp ratio than both, and both the mustang and the del sol run the 1/4 in ~17.1 so even if an auto s14 does the 1/4 at high 16 sec. like orion said, that's still better than the mustang, worst case scenario i should have stayed on his tail like in the del sol, and think about it, if he runs 17's and i was 3+cars behind then that means my car is running what like 17.6, that's very slow EVEN FOR AN AUTO.

I doubt your power to weight ratio is that great. The 240sx is more like 3100 with gas and people in it. The power after the tranny is probably like 110 whp. The automatic S14 w/intake I ran at the track did 17.4-17.7s. The problem is that the auto tranny simply will not launch the car.
Given your 17.1 for the mustang and 17.4 for 240sx I have experienced its about right that you are three cars behind him or so.

haha, I remember making a thread about: What's so bad about Automatics. I'll you the same question as they asked me, is this going to be your daily driver or a car you may want to race/show/ etc..can't remember the other question they asked me.
Nismo: Your Apex N1 dual, is the output sound loud or deep? Just wondering.
