View Full Version : Looking for some security advice.

I'm quite concerned about the security of my car, especially with thefts on the rise and with the number of visible mods increasing. So I'd appreciate if anyone could give me some info on what systems to be looking at. Let me mention that my car is a base model, so keyless entry and such are pointless. I just need something that will provide the maximum security possible. I'm especially interested in systems that inform the owner if the car is being tempered with, but the ones I've looked at have too many features I don't need.
Oh, by the way, I did search, and didn't turn up anything that answered my questions well enough. (Although I may have missed something in the 20 or so pages the search turned up.....)

my friend works at a stereo shop in inglewood cali. theres this device that i had called MAGIC TOUCH. on my old car. you had to touch a screw w/one finger and stick your other finger into the cigarette lighter. your body then becomes like a ground and deactivates the alarm. youll have to do that every time a door opens though. youll get used to it after a while. its like $100 bucks i think plus an alarm if you dont have one. i had 10 of my friends try to take my car even w/the car running and they couldnt. the doors would lock, windows roll up, and the alarm and lights would flash. if you have an SR though, we have yet to figure out how to wire it to work w/the turbo timer so once we do and anyone is interested ill let you guys know.

u can have keyless entry on a nonpower door lock 240, all u need are solenoids that pull the lock. comes in super handy

Shameless plug for a friend!
Wire a switch into your clutch interlock relay circuit. Switch off, car won't start, switch on, car will start (even in gear).

there is only ONE worthwhile kill switch, and its not on the clutch interlock.. its on the motor or fuel system. if you can, cut the fuel pump or switched ECU power. NO ECU = no engine firing.
anyone can bypass starter or clutch interlock kill switches, you just push start the car. BUT, push start the car does nothing if there is no fuel or ECU.
its the BEST solution, the least expensive, and all it takes is time and some knowledge to install. Everything else is a waste of time. Plus, the steering wheel thing is just excessive.

if i had tons of mods, i would get lojack, get a better alarm, install a kill switch and get a wheel release, but since my car is crap, all i have is a club, lol...
at least with the steering release/wheel not being there, it will deter certain crooks from stealing the car, of course, if someone really really wants it, the car will be stolen...

excessive? probably.
but its an excellent deterrent. it also limits their method to just using a flatbed and towing your damn car away, and i'd be really surprised if they did that for a pos 240sx.

Mike, I love you, brother, but you're a tool!
~$150 bucks or so for a removable steering wheel is excessive? You're crazy! $2000 on lighting is excessive. $150 on removable hub or (god forbid) an ALARM is not excessive.

AGREED!...$2000 for lighting is crazy, considering the value of our cars, but still quite awesome.
...however, kevin, i think he was referring to the concept of removing your steering wheel and carrying it around with you as being excessive. Not the amount of money paid for the quick release hub.

pager alarm with some goodies from http://asianwolf.com/ can at least slow people down... like this siren that has back up power so if they slice wires, it stays on.. http://www.asianwolf.com/item.jhtml?UCIDs=1068694|1069136&PRID=1354125
At least it will let u know when ur car is being messed with and cause a commotion. last year my car was broken into during a morning class at school withen 1 hour i was away from it.. so the pager alarm would have been nice.

hehe dont get me wrong, i was actually thinking after writing that... its partially excessive and its partially not.
having a removeable steering wheel IS something that is interesting and could be of value, BUT.. can you imagine leaving your car on a date with a girl and walking into a club with your steering wheel? i think NOT.
now, lets take the other scenerio. your car is equipped with the wheel removal, what can you do as a thief:
a) tow the car
b) have the same hub adaptor (possible if the person knows and wants your car)
also, what if the steering wheel comes loose while you're driving? its happened to people I know, and i definately dont want that ever ever EVER happening to me. so, its really just something to think about.
this is why, put a switch, on your ECU or fuel. flip switch and you're all done.
i just know that *I* would never walk away from my car with the steering wheel on a daily basis. i wouldnt even lock "the club" when i would use it, i would just put it on for decoration.

Actually, my car has Lojack (god knows if it still works, though). The clutch thing won't work because the clutch button thing doesn't work anyway, so it's been disabled. And I do have a kill switch, which also mysteriously stopped working when my car came back from the shop.... And the steering wheel thing, while I'm planning to do it someday, I can't do it now, as that would necessitate buying a steering wheel and hub in addition to the quick release, so it'd cost close to 500 bucks.
Besides, I'd rather have something that helps prevent people doing anything to my car, as opposed to just trying to tamper with it. Even if they can't take the car, 10 minutes and a socket set and they've got my Sparco and harness.
So I'm really just looking for an alarm. That airwolf one does look quite good, does anyone know how the siren is?

mmm the Lojack should still work.
i don't think they cancel it.
my suggestion is to go to whatever stereo shop is local and see if they do alarms too.
get whatever pager alarm they have.

still, like u said, a thief can have your car towed in both setups u mentioned above even if your ECU/Fuel kill switch is active....
WorksBell has this out now for people with Quick Release steering wheel hubs:

for me though, i didnt have the quick release solely as a theft deterrant, but rather making me get out of my seats ALOT easier

yeah, even lojack is not 100%...
Shit if anyone steals someones car with all that shit on it they deserve it.
I think with all the steering wheel release hub + that lock aren't nearing a simple lojack install? When you do discover your car is actually missing you call up lojack and they track it and the person who stole it and hopefully they get caught unless they freaking stripped the shit out of it and all you find is a shell :(
At least you get the shell back and can start allover without buying a new car haha.

Actually, my car has Lojack (god knows if it still works, though).
If your car has lojack, it's good for the life of the car. However, if the vehicle changes owners, the lojack is no longer valid, unless you call lojack, have them change ownership, and pay them a certain fee. If you've had the lojack awhile (say over 3 years) it'd be a good idea to call a lojack tech and have them check your unit's battery (and replace it if necessary). This would also be a good time to have LoJack Early Warning installed (basically, a system that tells you within 15-30 minutes if your car has been moved without your permission. It's an extra $250 on top of regular LoJack.

with that said.. how much does lojack usually run? i checked the website and couldn't find any prices. it's probably a whole lot but if you plan on dropping thousands of dollars *ahem* into your car it ain't a real bad idea.
plus, the insurance company LOVES to hear that lojack is in your car...

Retail can go anywhere from 450-1500 depending on markup (ie. you'll pay ~500 at a Nissan dealership or 1500 at a BMW dealership generally) I think the going rate is around 450-500? I dunno, I had a dealership hookup (from WORKING there) and I got it installed at cost.
Also, my insurance company didn't really give 2 shits that I got it put on. No discount, no nothing.
Maybe if I had an original Cobra or a '63 Vette in factory new condition, they might. But, as they say, your mileage may vary. Your ins. co. might care.
