View Full Version : Whats your side hustle?

A lot of people work full time jobs but also have a side hustle to support your hobbies, lets talk about some side hustles we all do.

I do data center work on the side like racking up servers and setting up labs, I really love doing cable management on newly deployed blade switches because it takes up so much time! even though they're w9 contracts.

The best side gig I've done is wire up a brand new house with cat6 to each room and common area, hooked up to some cisco poe switches, ran multiple CCTV cameras via cat6, setup for remote access and have all the files stored at a remote location, It was a challenge but it was extremely fun and taught me a lot about fishing wires. I wish the owner of the home didn't cheap out and ran conduit for all the exterior cables, but I have a feeling i'll be back within a year or two to run new cat6 cables for the exterior.
The best part about this was it was paid in cash and bbq.

I also buy and sell car parts which im sure a lot of you guys do.

Maybe the most common one is buying, fixing and then selling cars..easy money if your mechanically inclined.

I work in the residential HVAC industry so I interact with alot of people and my name gets out there. Every once in awhile I get a job installing central air or fixing/service people's furnaces and do that all for cash. On installs I usually profit at least 2-3x what I spend on equipment.

My side hustle is my truck makes money, while I'm making money, while getting more money, just to show up to work to make money. I basically have three incomes while doing one job lol. 6-7 days a week. 10 to 12 hours a day. Weld life. Someone has to build America.

Side hustle would be transport services on my days off. Usually deliver goods or simply become a mobile mechanic since I do carry decent tools on my work van.

you really don't need a large machine planer. if you really needed a machine planer any decent sized bench planer would do the job and can be had used for $100 - $300 depending on brand/size. Or you can do what my uncle did and make one.

most people are using just good old hand planers. there's an older guy down the road from me that builds amazing acoustics with just basic tools. his guitars are way better than any store sold acoustic i've ever laid hands on. evern crazier is he just does it for himself and not profit. i'm not even sure that he's ever sold one of his guitars.

are you wanting to make an acoustic or electric? if electric you may want to check out this guys youtube videos. some good insight on making electric guitars. https://www.youtube.com/user/CrimsonCustomGuitars/videos

of course there are lots of others along the same lines.

two good books i'd advise to get if you're interested in making electrics are ....

Build Your Own Electric Guitar by Martin Oakham
and
Make Your Own Electric Guitar by Melvyn Hiscock

Yeah taxi companies lobbied hard to keep us out of LAx and San Fran.
Taxis get so mad that they cut off and cause problems with Lyft/uber drivers
So much so that Lyft issues windshield stickers instead of the signature big mustache. The mustache was like a big pink target for taxis lol were just riding the wave until it dries out

If you have a 4 door that's in good shape and at least 2005 for uber and 2003 or newer for Lyft. They inspect the safety of the car so it's gotta be in good shape
Good driving record no dui or reckless driving

Uber had a promotion where you get 500$ if your a Lyft driver and sign up to become a uber driver. Not sure if they still have it though
You can make 100$ a day within the first few hours on weekends if it's busy
Good luck . Also try sidecar

Edit: I sound like an instagram Spam account lmao

I do this from time to time. Can be fun, but can also be a headache. The quick and direct jobs are what you want. I took on someone's project once and it was the worst experience ever haha. Especially while I'm trying to build my own projects on top of a full-time engineering job.

Anyone ever heard or done any beer delivery? I remember being at a college party once and someone had beer delivered to them through a service. I bet that would be a good ass gig and you would have some funny stories as well. As far as myself, I try to flip cars and parts/electronics. Although I hate trying to sell shit because everyone lowballs you and I can't stand some of the dipshits on craigslist. Thought about getting into repairing iphones/tablets/laptops, love doing that kind of stuff along with jailbreaking phones and apple Tv's.

Straight up mechanic work is a decent gig, trying to diagnose and figure out what's going on is where it becomes a headache and really a waste of time as far as it being a side hustle.

Different people have different skills. If you understand how an engine works, diagnostic might be your thing. If you have been around physically installing things and you can knock it out faster than anyone else, then installing parts might be your thing.

I'd like to raise an interesting thought for the people in here who think they need a side hustle. If you enjoy doing your side hustle more than your "main thing", why isn't your side hustle your main thing?

TheRealSy90
04-02-2015, 12:12 PM
I tried that, it stopped being a fun thing to do on the side for some extra cash. I found out I hate working on cars as a primary job that i'd have to do every day haha.

I ask myself this a lot, but I'm still young so figuring out my career as I go. Working on cars for people is fun but not as mentally challenging as what my main gig is. For now I enjoy what I do most of the week, sure there's days I hate it but isn't that all just a part of life?

Read Arnold's new book, Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story. There is a LOT of good stuff in it but one line that he repeats over and over that stuck was, "big risks, big rewards".
And really your risk isn't that big IMO. I'd say when your side tattoo jobs is about 1/3 of your full salary, its def time to go.

ya man, everyone should. Arnold is the boss. Most people only know Arnold as some meat head actor who some how became the governator.

Hes a mover and shaker. As a poor boy in Austria he decided to be a world champion body builder and a movie star in America, so he did. Along the way he also ran successful businesses, and was a real estate mogul. This guy is the ultimate boss. He was going to go through heart surgery (installing valve) without telling his wife and be back in time to promote his Batman and Robin movie in the 90s lol.

Hows your Forex going? One of my short term rentals last week from Switzerland owned a proprietary software that automated Forex trading around the clock. He dosn't sell his software to anyone obviously (other than the hedgefund that he partners with), but its cool that there are key patterns that can suggest a buy or a sell and result in a 10% return.

Im curious to know how that broker works out for you. I taught myself how to trade forex and stocks a few years ago. I traded a $500 account with FXCM and was doing ok as far as return wise. My main job pays well but recently I have become completely bored with the monotonous routine. So I would like to trade more frequently and seriously now. But I noticed in recent years, the CFTC has made it ever much more difficult to trade here stateside. Traders Way and FinPro seem to be ok so far as offshore brokers go but it is still risky.

Im no expert but I have done my fair share of due diligence learning the forex market so if either of you have any questions, feel free to PM me and maybe I can help shorten the learning curve some.
