New s13 pics.. engine degreased too

Hi all,

I bought this 240 about 2 weeks ago to replace my other s13 with a bad head gasket. It's a 1992 with 156k on it, 5 speed. It's in pretty decent condition; the body needs some work.

Last weekend the water pump blew up, but that's the only thing I've replaced so far. Oh I installed my Clarion deck outta my other s13, and also robbed the new shift boot I got off ebay for it.

Plans for the car.. Eventually I will sr20 it; but to begin with I'll install some coilovers... I don't want to do too much that wouldn't transfer to a sr20; but the N1 catback looks nice and should free a few hp up. Also will install a shroom style air filter. The car is a daily drifter.

but i gotta ask, how the hell do you guys get the car SO clean? i've tried going to town on my engine with degreaser and water but it always comes out looking like ass with smear marks all over.

Whats up all

To clean the engine I went to autozone and picked up a few thing.. I got 2 cans of the Gunk cleaner ($4 total) and 1 can of this no-rinse "engine detailer". The detailer is basically armorall for the engine -- you don't rinse it off. It "protects" hoses, metal, plastic. It leaves things shiny and new-looking. I'm farking impressed, and will buy more of it.

I drove the car to the carwash and let it cool for about 20 mins, then rinsed engine with low-pres wash. No major steam clouds, so then I attacked it with the 2 cans of stuff, spraying mostly right on the oily stuff; the valve cover (leaky gasket), and powersteering pump (avoiding distributor). I let the 1st can worth of stuff sit on the engine for 15 minutes (like it tells u to) then I attacked with the 2nd can. I let it sit for another 15 minutes. Then I used the soapy high pressure mix outta the wash to rinse off, then rinsed with the "spot-free" rinse.

Next i fired up the engine and let it run for a few minutes; then turned it off an took some shop towels to the engine. I got rid of all the standing-water I could see, and towel dried the valve cover, etc... Then per the instructions on the detailer, I sprayed the hell outta everything. It said it would work good on plastic and wouldn't harm paint, so I hit the whole firewall, valve cover, rad shroud, hoses, strut towers, etc.. Everything. The can was only 1/2 used when I had everything covered, so I went around the whole engine again, twice. Still some stuff left (I was amazed how long the can went for) so I used some on the fender liners and tires.

I let the stuff sit (u don't rub/rinse it off) for 15 minutes to try, washed the outside of the car and left. Of course for about 5 minutes there was some smoking, and the car smelled like a diesel truck (from the degreaser). That smell has gone away (in about 4 days), and the engine looks like it's brand spankin new. I still can't believe the stuff works as good as it does!

Good luck & I'd suggest everyone do this. It makes workin on the engine so much cleaner!

I paid $2300 for this one. KBB is only about $2150 but the woman wanted $2800... Then 2 months later only wanted $2500. I offered $2300 and bought it.

My other 240 (90, 200k, 5sp) seller wanted $1500, I offered $1200 then later talked her down to $1100. About 2 weeks later it suffered a blown rad hose, cracked rad and a busted head gasket. Ugh. It's sitting in an un-named parking garage in downtown los angeles right now. When I swap the sr20 into my new 240 I'll drop the KA24DE into my 90 and sell it.

Oh if your engine is really that bad, you might want to use the degreaser, let it sit for 10 minutes then take a nylon brush to things. Then use another can of degreaser... Maybe even a steam pressure washer if u can find one, they work wonders on grease/oil. I think really that the "engine detailer" stuff did the trick; without it the engine is non-glossy and dirt is very visible. Make sure you let the degreaser sit for 15-20 minutes, and try using 2 cans? Good luck :)

No point in cleaning if you just leave the leaky gasket. All that oil burning up on the header isn't to great imo.

Go back to autozone and get some RTV and replace said gasket.

Alot of honda guys use this technique:

Let the car warm up to operating temp.(just enough to where it won't burn with ur hand on the valve cover.

Douse the engine with Simple Green all purpose cleaner

Let sit for 10-15 minutes

Power wash all the cleaner off

Repeat for any that won't come off but this time scrub with scrub brush.

Works wonders on their enginebays.

I always thought it was best to do it when the engine was cold, as heat can cause spotting.

Ya, and you don't want to spray cold water on a hot engine block or else it will crack.
