View Full Version : Turning rotors
I tried searching but got few results with no answers. When should you turn rotors? I'm asking because I just the 5-lug swap for the rear last night. I swapped the 5-lug from my crashed s14 to my 4-lug base s14 and I'm using the rotors from the se s14 with the brake pads from the base s14. Kind of mix and matched. Now I haven't driven it yet and it's o n jackstands... should I turn the rotors to avoid any brake problems or am I cool.

depends on the condition of the rotors, are they warped, scratched, scorched, how thick they still are, etc... a picture of them would help...
non of the above but they are pretty fucking rusted.

if its just rusted, the brake pads should take care of that
other than that, there should be a spec for rotors, so just see if its within specs.

Since your rotor is rusted I'll give you this from one of my textbooks.
If the rotor is dirty enough to interfere with inspection, clean it with a shop cloth dampened in brake cleaning solvent or alcohol. If the friction surface is rusted, remove the rust with medium-grit sandpaper or emery cloth and then clean with brake cleaner or alcohol.
This is also from the same book.
Rotor Measurement
Various micrometers and dial indicators are needed to measure a rotor. A micrometer is used to measure rotor thickness and parallelism, as well as taper. Parallelism is achieved when both sides of the rotor are exactly parallel to each other. Loss of parallelism happens during normal wear and tea. A dial indicator is used to measure rotor run out. Some rotors require an additional surface depth measurement.
If you want me to get more or summarize all of the checks just ask and I'll try to type it up and post.
