View Full Version : Collins Adapter 350z or R154

Trying to weigh out the options for transmissions for my 1jz and I'm either thinking the Collins Adapter to the 350z 1jz trans with the flywheel or the R154.
http://collinsadapters.com/index.php/adapter-plates/toyota/2jz-1jz-to-350z-adapterplate-flywheel-combo.html
My question is
Is it worth the extra money to go to Collins Adapter or should I stay with a r154 instead. Can somebody shed some light and let me know if they ran into any troubles with the Collins adapter.

Just got his kit to go cd009 on my turbo ls build, quaility appears to be amazing so far

I just want to make sure there isn't any major mounting issues.

I can't speak for this kit, but I have a 350z trans bolted to a 1jz in my s13. I'm using a Maverick Motorsports adapter and I love it, very high quality. It is a little more expensive and requires you to mill the bell housing slightly which raises cost even more. Sadly this adapter wasn't around when I was looking for one. I can tell you that the shifter will be extremely far back even with the shifter bracket as short as possible. Depends on your motor mounts as well with that but my 1jz sits pretty close to my firewall. Also the trans tunnel requires a lot of "massaging" to get the bulky trans to fit. I love the transmission and still think its worth the work for me, but I don't drive my car on the street that much and its completely gutted so the lack of center console and odd shifter placement doesn't bother me at all. I actually like how far back it sits as far as arm placement but not a cosmetically smart decision. I'm currently in Korea so can't take any pics, but if I can find some I'll post them.

Well that's the reason I want to go with Collins instead of the Marverick kit because I don't have to mill the bell house. But I know they do make quality stuff so they still may be a option. Thanks guys for the help! Keep them coming!

Power goals aside, I personally I would much rather have the cd09... it's just a much nicer feeling transmission and having a 6th speed is a bonus. Plus it's much simpler to relocate the shifter where you need. You will need to consider your final drive choice carefully with either trans obviously.

Yeah, I want to go cd009 of course since that's the year they stop will the failures. Like I said it's going to a drift car so I'm leaning towards Collins at this point.

If the R154 is still an option, the 5th gear is 0.753 where the CD009 is 0.794, meaning you will see a very slightly higher top speed with the R154. Common misconception with a 6 speed is that you are adding a gear at the end. In reality you are adding a gear between 1st and 2nd on most transmissions.

Just for S&G's here is what I found gear for gear
R154 / CD009
1st 3.251 / 3.794
2nd 1.955 / 2.324
3rd 1.310 / 1.624
4th 1.000 / 1.271
5th 0.753 / 1.000
6th N/A / 0.794

If you arent planning to do any work to the transmission I say CD009 any day. If you are planning to drift you will likely want to build that R154 with some MC upgrades which will add some cost for sure. R154 are known for being hit or miss. I had mine built with many MC upgrades for an expected 700+rwhp setup but was fortunate enough to have purchased everything before the R154 became the hot ticket item. Not sure what the cost of parts and such for it are now. After it was all said and done for my rebuild I was probably $800-1000 away from a V160 which is obviously the better choice.

I understand the point of this adapter when it comes to this motor, but why would someone want to use a 350z trans on a ls platform. The cost would be almost the same if not more + the extra work needed. Just doesn't make any sense unless u had a 350z and wanted to swap it i suppose. The t56 is by far a better choice than a cd009 I think. Plus it can be rebuilt fairly easier and cheaper.
Sorry for being off topic a bit.

^^From what I have read the CD009 is a very stout transmission in stock form. As the cost of the T56 goes up I guess it comes down to cost and availability. Not saying that the T56 is weak in comparison just remember the CD009 taking abuse and can be had for under $1000. I remember reading somewhere a year or two ago about a CD009 taking 1200rwhp of 2J power for an 8 sec 1/4 and still ticking. Now granted it would the TQ killing the trans but I am sure the TQ of that 1200rwhp Supgra was up there.

I blew my t-56, did a stage 2 rebuild and it was still messed up. I ditched it for the cd009 and I'm very happy with the decision. I talked to Tick before making the choice, and they said Tremec is phasing out the t-56 parts to push people toward the tr6060 (t-56 magnum). For example the viper style 2nd gear is discontinued. The whole swap was around the price of buying a stock t-56, and those will barely hold 450 wtq.
Back on topic: Collins makes a great product, and the cd009 is a great trans.

Factory T56 transmission out of F-bodies are garbage. They are aged and generally speaking all need rebuilds and upgraded parts to handle decent power. Hell the cost of a T56 alone is almost more than the sum of parts for the CD009 swap. $1000-1200 for a trans that needs a rebuild and upgraded parts is not my idea of economical.

I know this thread was a little while ago, but I had someone take pictures of my shifter location just in case you haven't gotten this far yet.

Sorry to bump and old thread, but I'm entertaining the idea of buying this kit, did anyone try it.
BTW, the driver of this car is a personal good friend named Stephen Jessie.

Your shifter could have been relocated further forward by the looks of this picture, you can get the shift lever right on top of that universal joint on the selector shaft.
There's also a company that makes a shifter for the CD009 that goes right on the back end of that black inspection plate, which in your case would almost be in the oem location. I'd have to look up the name when I get off work I saw it on instagram.

I ended up buying the Collins Kit but haven't mounted everything up because I am still working on the rear end. I am interested in the shifter though let me know when you get more pictures. Thanks.

Actually it's @cbfperformance on Instagram. About 6 inches further forward than the Hoke shifter. It eliminates the shifter bracket completely and goes on the inspection plate. Second pic shows their shifter and a shortened bracket shifter both installed.

I'm in the middle of a ls swap in my s14, just hunting down a tranny. found a cd009 with 9000km for $1500cad. Knowing that the cd009 can handle the power is a huge bonus. if everything goes as planned and i use the cbfperformance shifter relocation, i will update you guys with some pictures.
