View Full Version : axle nut Q
When I try to loosen the axle nut the freaking hub is spinning. I guess I was doing something backwards. Fsm says you should take the rotor/ caliper off after removing the nut. Did you guys pull the ebrake up to keep the hub from spinning to break the axle nut loose? Or did you jam something to prevent the axle/ hub from spinning? Any tips before I get back to work on it tommrow. Didn't have time to mess with it but everytime I tried loosening it with the breaker bar I was just spinning everything haha. Wish I had a freaking impact gun. This is the rear hubs btw.

I usually pull the ebrake up but sometimes it still slips. Having an impact doesn't hurt either. But yeah removing the calipers and rotor after the nut is the better way to do it.

well im swapping out my rear hubs this upcoming week. i figure there shouldnt be much to it, ill just run by the public library and make a copy of the pages i need in the FSM.
im assuming all i need to do is remove the axle nut with rotors and calipers attached. then remove calipers, rotors and hubs ( i assume they will pull right out now?) clean up all matching surfaces, possibly re-lube, bolt up new z32 5 lug hubs, s14 se rotors and install new brake pads...have fun
are there any vital steps im missing?.....

you can also have a buddy hold a long pry-bar between the the wheel studs while you break the axle nut loose .....
I put the car in freaking gear but the axle spins so I'm not getting any resistance to remove the nut. i guess something is fucked up or something. Btw this is on my totaled s14. Do I need to turn the car on a put it in gear ??? I'm just confused.

Another way to do it is to pop the cover off of the rims (if you have them) and set the car on the ground. Make sure you can reach the nut through the rim, by using the weight of the car to hold the wheels in place, you should be able to take it off.

the tranny is only connected to the rear wheels remember, so if you're doing the front, they will spin.
and no you don't need to turn the car on to put it in gear.
Im having a prob with the rear.... when i put it in gear it still spins

If you think getting the axle nut off is hard, try doing it on a dropped subframe... you get the whole subframe spinning and twisting, as well as the axles themselves, and there's no e-brake to bail you out.
Anyway, the hubs will probably give you trouble. What you gotta do is open the 4 bolts halfway and then hammer on the bolts. Eventually, the hubs will pop out halfway, and you can continue removing the 4 hub bolts. If you don't understand what I wrote, you'll see what I mean when you get working on it...
YA i kno what you mean. PB blaster helped a shit load all I had to do was break the nuts and they spun off with my hands on the socket. As far as getting the axle nut off I just put the wheels back on and dropped to the ground and broke loose the nut through the opening of the SE wheel.

Nice, I remember I had to use the handle from my 3 ton jack as a cheater bar to get those bitches off.
