Looking into doing a jz series swap into my s13 coupe, was sold on 2jz for the longest time until I started considering a 1jz swap. I'm not looking for insane 800hp power, something around 350-600hp **RELIABLY**. From what I head and obviously because its older, 1jz would be a cheaper choice. But would I really be cutting that much of the cost by going 1jz rather than 2jz? Id be going R154 for sure, single turbo, injectors, ect. ect. Could anyone chime in some opinions on a jz swap?
Budget is around $6k for the swap. I live in Canada so add 10%-30% on all the parts commonly found in US (shipping, you get it)

It all depends on how cheap you shop, the quality of the parts you buy, and who does your work. 1j stuff is cheaper than 2j stuff but it is also older tech. Unless going vvti 1jz it's a waste IMO. Vvti 1jz tomei cams ,arms turbo and some supporting mods puts out 450+ rwhp for not much invested. Although non vvti 1j is $700 here locally.
All depends honestly some people are happy with an hx35 some people want a gtx3582r. All depends on your wants and budget.
If your going to be spending all that anyways and upgrading everything might as well go 2jz. The extra displacement helps.

I'd be doing most the work. Finding a cheap engine up in Canada is tough and I'd rather not cut any corners what so ever. I figured if it's only going to be pushing 650hp tops why not 1j, but if I'm around the same price range 2j would definitely be something to consider. I just don't want to be forking out ridiculous amount of money for maintenance and wear and tear parts if the other engine would be a cheaper route, if you get what I'm saying

650hp hp 1j is going to be laggy in stock form. It would need e85 qsv/or split pulse, cams, and a nice ems that can control the boost electronically. Even then you will still be without the benefit of vvti. In my opinion go with the best tech you can afford always. Wether it be shitty injectors vs id1000s etc. again all depends on what you want.

ship your parts to the boarder and then go down and pick them up! you can save a lot of money that way too its only a 2.5 hour drive for you

So in other words 1j vvti or 2j? If rather not go with an aristo 2j as it's easier to tune a 2j without vvti from what I hear

What you hear is incorrect. Its 2014, if your tuner cant tune vvti find another tuner.

I get that, anything is do able. But I'm just saying I would be able to achieve the numbers I'm looking for with a non vvti, you can squeeze just about every ounce of power out of a 2jz non vvti

If you plan to go single turbo and everything right away expect to spend more than 6k on the swap. I'd honestly say to double that unless you plan on getting super cheap parts and then buying quality parts in a year or two when the others fail.
