View Full Version : In the weeds with my SR20

This is an introduction, so I'll start from the top. I am legally blind, however I have built a Datsun 510 autocross car with an SR20DET, GT3071R, 14 psi. It ran like an animal for about two years, but my brother finally blew the stock head gasket so I replaced it with a Tomey.

While doing this work I decided to swap the stock coil set up with an LS2 coil packs. I used the stock coil harness, and followed the swap threads I found here for wiring. I am getting ground for the low-voltage trigger from the bypassed igniter chipped plug ground that goes to the ECU. I should also mention I am running a Link G4 standalone. At this point, I have spark, but the engine will not start. I have checked to confirm spark, the CAS is installed correctly, the low-voltage trigger wires are soldered in correct sequence, and I have 40 psi showing on the fuel regulator.

When the engine turns over I am getting absolutely no firing on any cylinder. I do not have a PC connected to the ECU, so I have been unable to check for faults or run any diagnostic. Given my vision issues I am not confident enough to start digging any deeper on my own. Electrical is not my strong suite and I don't want to F shit up, so I'm looking for help guys.

Here are a few licts of the car and a link to the build thread on the 510realm.

Thanks

For the vipec I had there was a procedure to set up the ecu before start up. The link is almost the same I think. You probably need to set up the ecu, then it should work. Try to hook it up to the computer.

Use a noid light to verify that the injectors are firing.
Normally if you have spark, you should have injector pulse since they're both triggered by the CAS, but I don't know about how your ecu triggers.

Thanks for the info guys. The ECU was uploaded with the E5 start up map when it was originally tuned to run with the mods I've done. Larger injectors, higher boost, etc. It was running well with the stock coils before the LS2 coil packs were swapped in. I'm pretty sure the Link mimics the stock ECU triggering because it is a plug and play unit that uses the stock harness and pinout plug.

You said it is sparking for sure? Check it with a timing light while cranking yet?

Yah, it's sparking like you'd expect when grounded to the motor. I know this is going to sound pathetic, but I don't have a timing light. All of the "Tuning" for this car has been done at Rebello racing (Antioch Ca. 35-40 miles away). The car is in my garage at home. Minimal tools, no lift. When I was building it 4 years ago, I rented warehouse space.

My biggest issue now is my vision. It's recently gotten hard for me to see the fine stuff and I don't trust myself with electrical. I've mistaken one wire for another, and paid the price too many times. I'm hoping to hire someone with SR skills to come here and give me a hand. Honestly, I don't thing all that long to figure out. If that doesn't work out I'll just tow it to Dave Rebello's shop.

Thanks Robby

No problem. Most likely the firing order is just messed up from the coils being plugged in incorrectly. Timing lights aren't that expensive but it will be tough to see. Maybe find a friend that has one? Good luck.
