Please read carefully before you blast me for asking a question that has already been answered.
I own a 240 and a j30... I know the j30 diff will work in the 240 but I wanna keep both cars drivable. Will the 240 open diff work in a j30?

Gonna need chassis and years for both.

Also, see if this helps too:

It depends if your j30 has the 5 bolt or s13 style 6 bolt axles. The earlier j30s come with the 6 Bolt axles. You will have to swap the differentials in the pumpkin while retaining the respective ring for that pumpkin, because the j30 pumpkin has a shorter gear ratio and the case is 1/2in longer case because it has abs on it.

the J30 can go on the 240, but the 240 cannot go down to J30. the way that the diff mounts in the J30/S14/Z32 subframe is different than in the S13. you can get bushing adapters for the J30 to fit in the s13 subframe, as long as you use the rear cover.

also 5 vs 6 bolt axlles make a difference
