I'm new to the SR and not sure what clutch to purchase, I've been searching but it's done nothing but get me more confused. I value most people's opinion on here so just hoping for some serious opinions.
I purchased this car with a Blacktop S13 SR w/the T25 machined out to a T28 from ISIS, FMIC, VLSD, Aluminum Drive Shaft and Aftermarket Pulleys. The only upgrades I'm probably going to do is bigger injections (550 or 720), z32 MAF and ECU. It had a stage 1 Exedy I believe in it and it's burnt up, slipping like crazy, so I have roughly $400 to spend on it what do you guys think would be the best option for me? It is not going to be daily driven, only a couple times at night and then when I go out racing.

The type of racing you do is going to determine what clutch you should get. As far as brand goes, I'm a Spec guy and probably always will be.

^^ what that guy said +1.
I have an exedy stage 2 on my sr20(PFC, 740cc inj, z32 MAF, t28).
It's a good clucth, to the wheels my car put down 333ftlbs

For racing, I prefer an Unsprung clutch since it seems to grip a lot more and just grabs way better and can hold more powwa.
For daily, I like the sprung clutches because they have a softer touch to them, allowing a smoother ride, easier.

My racing isn't anything hardcore, just street racing w/probably going to the track once a year.

This seems to be a good deal, do you guys agree?
DBoy, so I'm assuming it holds up well? Does it catch nice and strong? How is the pedal feel?

HAHA!!! Not like driving up and down the road trying to find a race, on Saturday there is a group of about 200 cars that are out in BFE, where no one is around and we line em up. SAFETY FIRST, I got a 2 year old.

The pedal feel is very streetable.
Just a little stiffer thatn stock feeling, and it grabs really good.
Exedy underates their clutches (their website says 290ftlbs),
As you can see my car made well over that as well as others.
The clucth disc is made of cerametallic material. Which is meant to have a long life, and more resistable to much higher heat. That makes this clucth a good choice for drifters that clucth kick a lot. Also good for racing, as it grabs quickly.
You can also go with an all ceramic material type clucth, those are more for racing but might not have the same life spand if chosen for drifting.

I've got just a thing for you. Possibly the best clutch you will find for SR within budget.

So what kind of track time? I hear people prefer unsprung for drifting, but if all you're doing is drag racing the one you linked will be more than enough.

What do you think about the link that I posted? It seems like a fantastic deal since it's only $299 currently.

It will honestly be a good mixture of both drag and drift. Y
Are you meaning more then enough in a good way or in a bad way? I'd assume it would be a good deal since it's on sale at the moment and cheaper then the stage down. Is that clutch a good setup for the cost or would it be smarter to go to a different manufacturer? Just trying to make the right decision before I pull the trigger.

I have heard and read bad reviews about spec clutches.
If it was me, I would go exedy, or clutchmasters Fx400.
I stay away from Spec. But that's my own opinion.

I've heard of the springs binding when people clutch kick. I've had Spec in my cars for years and years and know tons of people who run them for drag racing with 0 issues, but you're probably better off going unsprung for drifting.

two customer bought spec clutches, were both sent warped disks.
On my personal S15 SR, I have an EXEDY stage 2 (thicker pads, 3 puck, sprung disk, cera-metallic). works well, very streetable.
I don't recommend solid (unsprung) disks, single active or multi-plate clutches for street use.

Wrong. two reasons.
1) The sprung disk will reduce the amount of shock the trans and crank will take when clutch kicking. I've had several people come in to have trans' swapped just this season alone for clutch kicking with unsprung hubs. it will shear gears.
2) An unsprung disk will wear faster in a street car. You will also create hot spots on the flywheel and potentially warp the disk, being that the only give in the disk is the slip of the pad material. Aside from that, you run the risk of shearing gear sets/crack the input shaft on the trans. ka/sr/ca trans are glass, be nice to them.
An unsprung disk when used with a solid flywheel(non dual mass) is meant for an application such as road racing, where your gear changes are fast, and relatively low stress to the disk (rev matching, few stop/go's)

Spec Stage 3 = Just a little over $330 shipped Exedy Stage 2 = $450 shipped...so is the Exedy really worth $120 more even with it being Stage 2 and spec being stage 3?
I honestly won't be using it for any competition drifting or drag racing, it's more of a fun weekend car.

One more question for you genius's.
The guy I purchased the car from just replaced the clutch, flex disc, and pressure plate with the Exedy Stage 1..well he didn't tell me that it still needed to be broke in, so I was driving it hard, well it started slipping less then a month of driving it. So do I really need to purchase the entire kit?

Be carefull with your choice.
EXEDY is a very know name, that doesn't dissapoint.
The stage 2, 3 thing is just a number that manufactures put on them.
For me it's like saying "hey I have a stage 4 so that means it's better than your stage 3" lol.
Not sure if you understand what I'm trying to say.
I highly recommend you to go EXEDY st2 you WILL NOT be dissapointed!
If you want to stay under 320whp, tq, and be reliable this is your clucth.
I'll let you decide. GL

Thank you very much for your input man, I really apprecaite it. I did some more research and am starting to realize that there is a pretty good chance that saving $120 by going with the spec could result in me ending up having to buy another clutch soon down the road and it wouldn't be a saving overall.
Do you happen to know that since it is a brand new kit (Exedy Stage 1) in the car, it just got burnt up due to me not knowing that it was new, that I would have to actually replace the whole kit or could I just replace the disc?
Rustys14

You could probably get away with just replacing the disk but since you have a few power mods planned it would be wise to upgrade while your at it so you won't have to down the road.
As for which brand, I prefer ACT over Exedy or Spec. I had a stage one Exedy stat slipping on me almost right out of the box and that has left a sour taste in my mouth ever since. I have run a few Spec clutches in the past with no issues and currently have a stage 3 on my ca18 but my friend recently had a Spec grenade on him so I likely will not be going that route again. If I were in your shoes I would pony up the extra money up front and go ACT or even maybe even grab a used ORC Super Single and rebuild it if you want something fairly cheap and bomb proof.

This is my favorite all around clutch that I have ever had on any of my cars. Pedal feel is great and it is still doing fine almost 6 years later. I actually helped the new owner of the car put a new transmission in a few months ago and the clutch still had a ton of meat left on it. The car was never driven gently either...

Do you happen to know if there is a cheaper one that is comparable? I really need to stay around $400.
save another $110 then. it's free shipping...
exedy
spec
act
Google each of those brands and look for the specs you need. then buy the one closest to $400

I use an Exedy Stage 2. I have a stock SR with a couple bolt-ons. It was daily driven for a few years, occasional clutch kicks, drift event now and again and it's still good. Pedal feel is a little stiffer than stock, but very streetable. Clutch has been in the car for about 5 years. When it's time for a new one I'm going to look into Southbend, but will likely end up with another Exedy Stage 2.

The best clutch, my favorite of all the clutches I have ever had in any sr20det, was an OGURA single plate.
That said, ACT full face sprung disc is a very popular choice among the sr20det street daily crowd. That would be my second choice for sr20det daily drivers.

I had the Blitz active clutch back in the day. If I'm not mistaken it's pretty much the same as the Ogura clucth kit.
I loved it while it lasted, but I wasn't very bright at the time.
I think it only lasted me a bit over 2 years of daily because I never adjusted my clutch pedal height and free play, lol.
That thing would make a nice sound when the engine would turn over, kinda like 2 swords colliding.
King would yours make a kinda grinding type sounds when the pedal was depressed?

true, used an ORC 409D rebuild kit to rebuild a blitz single active, units are exactly the same. my old one would make a rattle, as all clutches that style do.

Yeah the floating pressure plate clutches make that noise.
