I have a 95 240 with a ka, a year ago I replaced the water pump and thermostat because it was over heating worked just fine. A few weeks ago I was at a drive thru and it was taking too long and I looked down and my temp gauge started to rise. I have electric fans so I know they are on but I'm not sure what the problem could be. The only thing I've changed is the header heat shield. I took it off because I was gonna put a long tube header on but realized my exhaust was welded together and didn't have the bolting bracket. Any ideas would be great thanks.

Time for head gasket/block test. Also make sure you don't have any coolant leaks.

probably too late, im willing to bet you didnt bleed the cooling system properly and your t-stat wasnt opening

time for a head job (most likely)

Run a clutch fan and shroud.

Make sure your electric fans are wired correctly depending on their orientation to the radiator (back of radiator=pulling, front=pushing). One of my S13s from about 7 or 8 years ago was overheating from the day I bought it, same way, idling would overheat and driving would cool. Couldn't figure it out for the life of me. Turned out to be the electric fans the previous owner installed were mounted as pushers but on the back of the radiator. Reversed polarity and everything was fine after that. Also, electric fans that are just slapped onto the radiator are useless unless it's an aftermarket unit with built in shroud. Other than that, just go back to a clutch fan and shroud, and if that doesn't fix it, refer to brndck's comment because you have bigger problems.

I've had the same problem as you on my 91 ka24de. Get your radiator checked, it may be clogged! I didn't think so either when I had the similar issue you did, bought a new radiator, bam! NEVER OVERHEATED AGAIN. What you can do to check if its clogged is feel the left side of the radiator and the right side of the radiator, both sides should both feel hot. Also if you have a temp gun, shoot it at your radiator for more accurate results. If anything, a local radiator shop should be able to see if it's clogged for free.
