Is this e brake mechanism on 1 caliper fixable?

So my driver side caliper was not locking with the e brake so I took it off and I'm stumped. The lever is all the way as if the e brake was on but it's not in this pic. And if I push it back down them the piston comes out. How did this happen? Can I fix it or do I need a new caliper?

I'd say easier to just get a reman caliper and call it a day.
