Toyota also markets a saab station wagon , this fits in with the GM thing since saab is fully owned by GM. Just like the SaabAru. Everybody is in everybody elses bed when it comes to the car biz.

This partnership started in the mid-late 80's when Chevy was selling rebadged FWD Toyotas as the "Nova," called by my high school auto tech teacher the "toy-let"

This is nothing new, just reversed. The chevy prism was a toyota camry, the pontiac vibe is a toyota matrix. The new pontiac GTO and the older Cadilac Catera are Holden Monaro's. My only comment though: Yeah Gm owns Holden, Saab, Opel, and a coupla more automakers but they do not own Subaru or Toyota...well yet. So far they only have a partnership with them.

The Prism was a rebadged Carolla, and I agree on all other points, a working relationship in no way suggests ownership, even if only partial ownership

am i the only one who thinks that black cavalier actually looks nice?
i mean sure, its fwd so i wouldnt drive it. but, for a POS it sure looks well kept. i'de give the owner props just for taking care of his car and making it look clean, which is much more than i can say for most of us (including myself at this current point in time). hehe
( although, i would definately smoke his shit anytime. )

Aside from the random bullshit on the side, I think it looks really well set up.
But, it's a supreme exercise in turd waxing. This is coming from a guy that really likes the first gen Neon. These cars are really badly engineered.. laughable. I'm not sure why Toyota would pick this car of all things out of the GM stable. If I were a Toyota exec, I would have gone for a Truck/SUV.
mrmephistopheles

gotta keep in mind the market they were picking for... Trucks/SUVs don't well that well here due to higher road taxes paid for vehicles with more engine displacement..

I also do not think the car looks horrible in certain regards. I agree though it is a bit "ricey" for my liking and I could not handle the FWD. Oh well I guess if it is your cup of tea.

Because they already have 2 pickups in several various trim levels, and 4 or 5 SUV's, all of which are fundamentally better than the ones that GM would be able to offer them. The carolla, on the other hand, in my opinion, was a piece of shit at the time that they made this deal to sell the cavalier in japan as a toyota. I would also think that now, since the cavalier is a dead model and the carolla has gotten better, that toyota isn't using them anymore.

The JDM Corolla in the late '90s was a great car, actually. The US-spec one gets a bad rap without a lot of basis, too. My GF has an '02 Corolla S (still previous gen), it's a nice car. In Japan they had better suspensions and the 4A-GE 20v.
Trust me, any Cavalier is pretty much worse than any Corolla.
The Cavalier wouldn't be cheap to register, either... with a 2.4L you're paying taxes like a midsize to fullsize car for a POS.

Corolla > Cavalier,lol.
Only the Z24 had the 2.4 Cav in the 1995+ body style....The base engine, and the Rally Sport engine is the 2.2. (They had the 'z24' badging way before it was actually a 2.4 engine.)

All the Japanese-spec Cavaliers had 2.4s. The coupes were equivalent to a USDM Z24, the sedans were a weird hybrid of a Z24 and an LS.

My bad...
And HOLY SHIT that is ALOT of money to go into a cav :goyou: :goyou: :goyou: Why a cav? Why not just take all that f****ing money and buy something decent to begin with?
I like some cavs...for daily stock driving, sure. My G/F's dad bought her,and her sister cars a the same time. A neon sport with the DOHC engine, and a Cav RS,same year, and the cav has like 2K more miles on it. Since than the neon has broken down about 5-6 times, the left blinker comes on when you hit the brakes, when you hit a hard bump/turn hard the right blinker comes on,neither one of them come on when you WANT them to. Its the upgraded engine for that year, and its unbelieveably slow. My slow-ass 240sx would run circles around it (Almost literally,I've "ran" it on the street...what a joke.) By comparison: The cav was dead even on a balls-out street race stock-stock with my S13,and has yet to break down on my girlfreind. The cav now has about 5K more miles now, too.

OH NO YOU DI'INT! haha. That Neon is a lemon, NOT representative of the brand! Is it an auto? If it's a 5spd, there's no excuse for it to be slower than a 240SX. Seriously. They can click off mid to high 15s bone stock. My '95 ran a 16.0 with clicking valves and bald tires.. I've still got the timeslips. The auto was crap, though.. 3 speed with crap ratios.

and everyone I know with a neon, ANY year, with an auto trans, experienced some sort of transmission problem... And it was NEVER any standard protocol, my cousin had to get a torque converter, coupla friends needed whole new transmissions, and lord knows what else I have seen and can't remember...
