So I got my project car running for the first time! Drove it around the block and on my way back home the water pump/powersteering belt snapped car felt sluggish and the check engine light came on?? what threw me off is why did the light come on?? Would the belt cause the light to go off?? i drove it back home i was a couple houses down no damage down or overheat.

maybe it threw the timing off and that might've caused the light and sluggish feeling

what the hell are you talking about???
how would a water pump belt throw TIMING off???

op start by replacing the belt, tensioning it PROPERLY, and then pull codes from the ecu.

Idk cuz it's on the crank and the sudden release of stress. Calm yo ass I'm not a master mechanic I'm just thinking out loud

Ok first of all what car/motor?? Is it a timing belt or drive/serp belt?and was that belt spinning the alternator as well? If so then the electrical system wasn't being charged/getting lower voltage therefore causing a check engine light.

think out loud to yourself rather than posting. Random comments will only cause confusion delaying the possibility of someone on here being able to help you out and get your car running again.

Like "brndck" stated. Replacing your belt is the first thing you need to do, then go from there. Does not make sense to go further without the primary issue handled first.

The belt more then likely was to tight, when not tensioned properly it can cause a belt to tear/snap.

...... just realized i didn't even answer your question.

ANSWER: check if anything is seized up, Buy new belt, install and tension correctly, Pull code from ecu. Then go from there.

The water pump, and PS pump have nothing to do with timing.. Think about it, how does water control your timing? Of Course the belt is on the crank pullie but does nothing to affect your timing, its only pumping/circulating out of the rad into the engine, and PS fluid feeds to the rack and back to the reservoir.. did you forget there is also a timing chain/belt that holds tension for timing. And OP your car was probably running sluggish because there was no cooled water being circulated into your engine (I know it didn't over heat) but granted if you would have drove it 3 more blocks it probably would have.

I'm assuming its a ka24de or ka24e.... He didn't state that his alt belt broke, and a ka24de or ka24e uses a serpentine for the water pump and PS pump.

It is for a ka24de. and it was the water pump and PS belt. Its a s14 engine in a S13 what i found out is that the crank pulley has space for a three rib belt BUT my belt is a 4 rib and also the water pump and ps pump fit a four rib. I went both to autozone and oreilly they both only had three rib belts not 4 so whats up with that?? its a 93 super hicas model and the belt is original from nissan

I'd source another ka motor and take the pulleys needed to make all of them match or go with a lightweight set from like isis or something.i had the same issue on my sr20 when the previous owner for some reason mismatched them from the s14 and s14 and my belt would pop off under heavy throttle
