Hello Zilvia, I feel like a lot of the forums I post on already are losing traffic so I'm hoping to get some more conversation and interest on here.
This is how I bought the car.

Opted to get this car completely maintenance-free and fixed oil leak, removed faded pin stripe, got rid of timing chain rattle and replaced 20 year old busted-ass bushings. I also did Q45 brake upgrade as well as stopped some leaks. Don't mind the fart can, ended up ditching that. Oh yeah and did a manual swap.

Bought some parts I didn't need. More pictures and info to come once I sort though it all but for $350 I bought two S14 seats, t3/t4 ebay turbo kit (log manifold, wastegate, blow off valve, SS lines, downpipe, midpipe, intercooler with no piping), two boost gauges, WG screamer pipe, test pipe, straight pipe to resonator, Z32 mass air flow sensor, fuel pressure regulator and looks like a few more random things. I'll look more in detail tomorrow.

Overall I know it's a bunch of eBay parts and not trying to fool anyone haha. There's also an intercooler, shifter, some small piping and assorted hose clamps as well not pictured.

Before I left to go back to school, my polyurethane filled mounts had cured so I installed them for the drive back to Blacksburg. For reference, here is what they looked like and I used 3M Windo-weld to fill them. It is the most miserable goo you will ever work with but came out alright.

I also thought the Exedy OEM replacement clutch was dead already at only 10,000 miles or so on it but I was wrong. Adjusted clutch pedal and moved the engagement point lower so it bites well now.

Got some work done on the car over the past few weeks.
- Got Roll Cage Components in Powhatan, VA to bend my roll bar (1.75"x.095" DOM). Couldn't find a bender locally but got this guy to bend a main hoop and cut/cope two parallels to the rear strut towers and a harness bar ($135)
-Alec welded up my diff and welded in my rollbar

Also did my first drift event, DRIFTVALLEY VIII. I was definitely a noob and with only two days driving on a welded diff prior to the event, it didn't turn out as I expected haha. It was a lot of fun though and can't wait to get more involved.

I now have almost everything to complete the turbo build except for a small bit of intercooler piping. Pretty excited to install this all and see how it goes. I broke my wrist a few months ago and get the cast off February 28th ,KA-T install starts the same day.

By some miracle it's almost done. All that's left is new BMC fitting to clear DP, crankcase vent, and vacuum lines on wastegate, blow off valve and turbo. She started right up though! Thanks Kyle and Andrew

Had some issues with a poorly running engine. After diagnosing for nearly a week straight, replacing far too many parts, then narrowing it down to a control issue, it turned out to be the ECU. Took a while between shipping to FL and receiving my repaired ECU, but it started right up and idled perfectly. -20 vacuum, solid idle.
I feel like you don't hear of this issue very often but be weary of used ECUs and potentially broken connections. Martin (RS Enthalpy) sent me this image, indicating two areas of concern when checking your ECU's condition. My bad connection is on the right.

Good update, KA-T runs great. So great that I could spin the clutch at WOT haha. It was a ton of fun but decided to park the car after developing a small lean issue. Pulling the intake manifold and cleaning up the vacuum lines before I replace the clutch.
I needed new tires to pass inspection so just said screw it and bought some cheap wheels. 17x8 +30 JNC 010 wheels wrapped in 225/45/17 Hankook V12s. I still need to add camber, roll and pull some fender so fitment is still in progress. I also really wanted silver face and not gold but that's all they offered in that size. Likely painting them.

Ordered RB25 13lb flywheel and clutch kit to hopefully start transferring KA-T to the wheels. This will be done likely the weekend after the 4th. 240 has basically become project car status and I've been dailying my newly acquired '89 CBR600F.

April:Two weeks ago I did my first drift event with the 1J, but before that I had some last minute issues with alternator and had to replace it. Supposedly SC300 ones will work but I had a tough time finding ones locally so ended up going to ebay off of a recommendation. Eagle Auto Electric hooked me up with two-day shipping and an awesome 130A alternator. I ran upgraded wiring and fuse to support this and got the car running the Friday before the event haha.

I've stock piled quite a few parts over this year and looking to do the last major installs for this car. I'm pretty excited as this car has never been much of a looker and been neglected in that respect.
Below are my wheels, 5lug swap, Maverick motorsports dual caliper, PBM HMIC, and Z32 brakes. Unfortunately 4 of my Z32 calipers need rebuilds so they wont be going on now but the legwork to install them will be done (maverick+5lug)
http://i.imgur.com/guaihhR.jpg?1
As mentioned, I'm only installing the rear Z32 calipers now to have functioning brakes. Hydro and fronts are to be installed at a later time once rebuilt. For maverick you have to cut the stock caliper brackets off.
http://i.imgur.com/zn5ox8y.jpg?1
I decided to make things more complicated and started redoing my carpet. I've always hated the gray but couldn't justify the cost of new carpet in a mostly track/weekend car. I used the Duplicolor carpet paint and it turned out great! Slightly stiffer feeling but not clumpy or flaky like I thought it would turn out.
http://i.imgur.com/xj7Xtxh.png
Here's my HMIC install in progress. Minimal cutting but it definitely required you to be willing to cut away at everything. Unfortunately with my radiator tilted forward, it made the install a little tight and I'll not have to get creative to reinstall my bumper support bracket.
http://i.imgur.com/peYg7mN.jpg?1
I also began fitting the wheels with a fender roller and torch. Turned out great but tight. These are 18x10.5 +12 wheels but with the maverick bracket have an effective offset of +4. This made fitting my 245/40/18 tires tough so I'm going down to a 235/40 and selling my 245s to a friend. Really trying to avoid overfenders to keep the cost slightly down.
http://i.imgur.com/mV9Tx80.jpg?1
Definitely have some work to do still but things are going well. I'll get some better pictures of everything together once it's back on the ground and driving again.
October 2016
I haven't updated in a while, just been doing other things. Been driving the car recently to get ready for 100 DoD at Summit Point. Cooling issues have been resolved with the HMIC install and the car is running great. Still shoots massive flames even without the VTA BOV hahah. The shifter bushings have made an amazing difference in trans feel, I now have a nice and crisp shifting R154.
Here's some pics of the kit and last weekend fun. Drifty pics after Dec 4th. Paint got pushed to early 2017 due to shop availability.

Got my headlight motors to work with the HMIC. Relocated the motor and bent/welded these extension rods.

I drove 100 DoD and had a blast, ripped off parts of my body kit throughout the day but it was a great event. I've really only drifted an oval track and a gokart track at this point so full fledged track experience was really new to me and I'm hooked.
Big Bend on Bridge Course was too fun. I was sloppy learning it but will have revenge next event.

Thanks guys! Lazy weekend here and didn't get much done mechanically. Been working on a Turbo KA walkthrough thread I want to post soon. looking to put a roll bar in my vert too. yours looks great. Any problem with the seat hitting the horizontal brace? It would save me a ton of time if you could share the height and width of the roll bar. I plan on removing the rear seat and replacing with some leather over plywood ( or plexiglass) for a Cobra-like rear seat delete option.
Thanks and good luck

Well, solid weekend at DriftValley. The car did not perform how I would have liked it to but a fun time nonetheless. Spending long nights prepping for an event the nights before meant adding a power steering cooler, changing out the steering rack, adding steering angle spacer, installing one-piece driveshaft, wiring dual electric fans (93 Altima), and relocating power steering reservoir. It was a lot to do but glad to have done it, adding tutorials for some of it to my "How to turbocharge a KA24DE.." thread eventually.
http://i.imgur.com/EjkH2pU.jpg
But anyways, DV brought a lot of troubles my way. Been having some intermittent breaking up issues while in boost. Smooth acceleration the problem seems to go away but near full throttle situations it feels like I'm almost hitting fuel cut. So at 12psi I feel like I've come to the conclusion its a weak spark from potentially a bad coil or distributor. I've checked for boost leaks and sealed my MAF that would cause a similar issue and still problems. Turned it down to 6psi and it ran....better. Still sounded like shit and missed at WOT but it would actually pull through the powerband just not well.
Aside from this obvious issues, I also forgot to reapply heat shielding to my brake master cylinder reservoir and burnt a hole in it driving to DV (doh!). I channeled my inner redneck and rigged the hell out of it to maintain fluid as it still held some.
http://i.imgur.com/wMtjbks.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/l3xFMe9.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/U1W2EXc.jpg
Now for some pictures that make it look like I wasn't spinning out a bunch. I honestly think I was having the most trouble with the car breaking up in boost. I had pretty aggressive entries but every time I'd then lay into it I'd hear it start missing and then the weight would lurch towards the front of the car and the rear end would get too loose and spin me. Err at least that's my excuse hahah. Only ran a few times in the afternoon as the morning was consumed by fixing my BMC and what not. It sucks but inspiration to get this thing right for next season. I want to drive most DV events next year, maybe a few Drift Nirvana's and then focus on paint, bodywork, etc.

Thanks guys, just now seeing these posts. As I told you sleepy this past weekend still having spark blowout issues. Had some trouble this past weekend too with my choice in poor heat shielding. On the way to Blacksburg for Car Club at VT car show, heat wore my spark plug wires down so I had to get off the highway with a sputtering engine, replace the plugs and wrap them in DEI's heat shielding.
Then on the way home after ripping some backroads/Blue Ridge Parkway with hokie240 (RB25 two-tone hatch), the clutch line decided to rupture from heat damage I suppose? The clutch brake fluid started a very small fire that we were able to catch quickly but left me without a clutch on the side of I-64. Got towed home but left me in a bad mood about the car.
(oh and a friend of mine bought the blue Cefiro from Japanese Classics)

Giving myself some time to work on other projects first and then coming back to this car next month. It's looking like I want to do things right. This car has so much doing it right (post-college work) and doing it wrong (during-college work). The corners I chose to cut are catching back up to me. Lessons learned. Without talking too much smack before I've done it, tentative plan is aero, fresh paint, cleaned up KA-T build and full standalone. No more driving a half-finished project.

Not trying to sound like a homo or anything,
But you and your car has been one of my inspirations for me since we kind of have a similar story.
I feel your pain, as you seen my transmission committed suicide, smdh. But As always, I have to realize, this comes with the territory and the things your currently going through made me realize that, that you must love, enjoy and commit yourself to the car. It would probably be easier just to go out and buy a newer 350z or something (which I could after all the money I spent so far for this damn car) but following your thread made me appreciate the potential of these cars. It also teaching me great patience haha. Cause sometimes I feel like pushing my car off the cliff. But I won't lol.
Stay up man, and keep on moving forward.

Yeah I was just bummed, I need more seat time not more wrench time haha. Going to press on. Started talking with a semi-local guy about Megasquirt and I'm excited. I get to do some tuning again and can't wait to push a stock block KA to it's limits as well as maybe build one? TBD. If I can figure this out now on a cheaper platform, I'll feel more comfortable doing MS on an RB25 or whatever else is to come in my future.

Yeah, sometimes you get bummed out, but don't let it get to you. You've got a cool project going and you're doing well with it.
Remember that time at 100DOD when a bunch of CCVT people came up to hang out and I blew out my clutch master or slave Sunday morning? That sucked but IIRC it was $28 shipped for new master and slave from Rock Auto.

Likely won't be updating for a little while. Plenty of maintenance parts are still rolling and I'm in the process of prepping the bay now. I'm also on back-order for harness work so the earliest this thing will be finished is mid-March...which makes me nervous because I want to make a March 21st event. Time will tell, can't wait!

Well bought a new mountain bike and haven't really been in the garage since then. Been doing some maintenance here and there including resealing sump/pan, rear main seal, timing components, VVTI cam gear seal, cam seals, valve cover gaskets, injector o-rings, new cam angle sensor, water pump, driftmotion pulleys, removed stock FPR, removed AC compressor, cleaned R154, installed release bearing assembly on spec pressure plate, new slave cylinder and extended my fuel lines with stainless hardline.
I also gave up on finding VVTI Soarer body pinouts and Panic Wire got back to me so I'm just paying him to do my harness. Hopefully that saves some time and headache.
http://i.imgur.com/WfhKmIQ.png
I've also been doing silly things like new coolant overflow, Bride seat and redoing my gauge layout. Progress is overall slow with this warmer weather pulling me outside more than chained to the garage. My current planned finish date is May 2nd and cruise down to Hyperfest. I really want to drift Patriot course but probably won't this time. Driftaholics opened up a few other Patriot course opportunities later this year to aim for.
Edit: for anyone interested here's my new bike! Airborne Goblin Evo. Good components, nice color, and rides well. I'm glad I've stepped up to a 29er, never going back

So a lot of my friends on local forums are giving me shit for taking my time with this build. I'm gonna post up what I did there for those of you that are actually reading this thread. It might also offer some comfort to those who have struggled on sometimes the most simple tasks yet exceeded on other more challenging ones.
Besides being slow and riding bikes all the time....the truth behind my slowness comes from me being an idiot. I don't know if Toyota forgot to apply anti-seize when installing the components or the front of the engine sat in water for a while but the harmonic balancer and crank pulley were so stupid seized on the crank snout.
http://i.imgur.com/6B557Ae.png
After having a hell of a time getting the harmonic balancer out, the crank pulley broke my spirit. After snapping two grade 5 bolts using a puller tool, I finally ordered some grade 8 bolts to do the job. Problem was I couldn't get the second grade 5 bolt out because not only was it completely stuck in there but it broke off flush to the pulley. I tried quite a few techniques and was very reluctant but I've finally given up and having a machine shop friend come by this afternoon to remove it for me. For those of you that know me, I'm very DIY oriented (re: stubborn) and don't like giving up. But at this point this tiny obstacle has halted the whole project. I have literally everything ready to go after this pulley comes off. The only thing I'll need to do is measure driveshaft length and electric fan clearance to order parts sized to fit.
http://i.imgur.com/VfL1bTn.jpg?1
So moral of the story, don't be afraid to ask for help. Sometimes the most simple stuff throws you for a loop and makes you question everything you know.

Can't blame you on that new bike man. My surly has been out of commission ever since the fam and I moved to nc. Also, I share the pain of broken bolts since I just got my rebuilt turbo back from the machine shop I had to have remove a few. You know of any good events near the va/nc border or area though? Can't drive too far because of work, but I'm down if it's on a weekend.

Got the bolt out and grade 8 puller bolts did the trick to remove the corroded pulley. My friend brought over much finer and more precise drills, we got the hole straightened out and then drove in the screw extractor to free it up. He somehow managed to save the threads so no helicoil was necessary....which I wasn't sure would fit given how tight the tolerances are at the hole. Next update should be a ThatDudeInBlue video of some of the maintenance and then installing the engine. Just waiting on my harness from Panic Wire before dropping it in.
Edit: Oh and here's a picture of my dog enjoying the Bride rep seat I picked up from a friend. All text build posts are boring.

Good progress! I was hoping to see this thing at driftvalley.
Thanks man! I'm gonna have to miss the upcoming one due to a mountain bike race but I'll be at the May Matsuri event put on May 30th.
Lol I just realized I watched your car on thatDudeinBlue's YouTube channel a while back. Good stuff man. Hopefully I'll see you guys out at drift valley next year with my 240.
Haha oh yeah, he lives right by my parent's house. He stopped by yesterday and I gave him a bunch of gopro video for the next update. Teaser..

Hard to tell in the pic of the stubborn gear but it looks like you may have broken a couple of the tiny teeth of the back. If so replace it because the car will not run with any of those missing. I made the same mistake before lol

Stupid close, was supposed to be running last Sunday but all the very small stuff left is taking me forever to do right. I'm really happy with the way everything fit and the way I'm doing this build. Can't wait! :2f2f:
Aiming for the middle of June DriftValley and/or the July 4th event.

I moved last month and haven't had much time with my car. It sat at my parent's while I was settling and then found it's way to my friend's dad's garage to sit another 20 minutes away in a different direction. Despite that I have started driving it around every other weekend. Hoping to rent a garage near my apartment soon so i can get all of my remaining kinks sorted out.
Remaining issues:
- Overheating. It runs around 200 on the highway with fans on. I could deal with that, just a little hot for my taste since we have such nice, cool Fall temps now. One day mid-cruise I stopped for food and afterward it heatsoaked or boiled and created an air pocket because then once back on the road it kept creeping up to 220 which is when I pulled over to cool off. Limped it home and now need to figure this out.
Current cooling setup:
- FAL 420 shrouded dual fans (12V relayed source with correct wiring)
- single pass aluminum radiator
- new oem waterpump
- blitz 1.3 rad cap
- new oem thermostat
- PS cooler mounted to radiator
- intercooler
- upper cooling panel
- NO lower duct or panel
- silicone hoses
- factory oil cooler (attached to oil filter piece) still in tact
- engine is literally 2mm away from the fans..tight packaging
- Toyota Red 50/50 mix that is well bled
- heater core intact and functional
Adding a lower panel between bumper, intercooler and lower part of the rad and hoping for the best. If not I'll try external oil cooler.
- Lack of Power. (resolved) At first my car felt extremely sluggish and a lack of low-end torque. Once you revved past 3K it would start to pick up but just felt terrible. I thought it might be timing issue or something because I was building boost just fine. After some research and testing some things, I think I found the factory recirc bypass valve was leaking. I built a block off plate and suddenly I was spinning tires again. I later ran into what i thought was boost cut issues but I think the plate started to leak (no gasket). I ended up blocking all of this off and it feels great now and pulls hard in boost.
- Slow drip from high pressure PS line fitting at the rack. This is likely from overtightening the stupid plastic o-ring that is used to seal the rack adapter. Gonna replace next week.
- Exhaust too low. I suck at exhaust work and accidentally aimed it downward while welding up the mid pipe. Should be an easy fix but haven't been at my friend's shop to do the work yet. It's also stupid loud. Somehow louder than my friend's hood exit, big single 2J swapped 240 or my old straight piped KA-T. Muffler is coming.
A taste of how good it sounds ..
M1fcQ2Dbp98
I'll update later this week/month once I get around to resolving some of these problems.

Nice nice nice. The coolant temp being at 200 is how mine is on mine. Even while cruising around. Our front bumpers just suck (can't even make a pun with it lol) at allowing air through.
*Your exhaust sounds just as loud as my 4in oval straight pipe exhaust lol

Small update: Added lower ducting, new PS fitting, received new motor mounts (oil pan is too low) and found a local TIG welder. Almost there to feeling confident in the car and getting back on the track.
Lower ducting panel helps tremendously. I still need to go for a longer cruise and see if I can get it 100% heatsoaked again but did a few donuts and beating on it and it held 200 well. Might finish off the ducting and do the sides soon.
I had another boost leak spring up and need to boost leak test again. Something goofy is going on with one of my block off plates/plugged lines I'm betting.

The group includes Thomas (RB25 hatch), Brandon (2JZ coupe), Jeremy (KA-T hatch), Josh (RB25 zenki) and myself. We're gonna try and start uploading more videos to the Black Hand youtube page, you should SUBSCRIBE to us if interested.
Anyways, my car is running great! I've since redone my exhaust including an upgraded downpipe and muffler and fixed a major vacuum leak that was only present when warmed up. Have a few small things to do before I'm ready for 2016 season and actually making it to events again. I'm so sick of hardparking and taking my time with this build. I've set a personal goal to race each month, whether that be drifting or mountain biking, so expect more frequent posts.

Winter Update: Not much been going on other than final prep for the spring and continuing to work out small driveability stuff.
I had a break-up issue under full boost that I cured with tightening my spark plug gap (.035 to .032). My fuel pump fuse popped one night so I'm going to start monitoring that, no frays in the wire or places to ground, maybe the pump is on its way out. Lowered the car a bit more and got an alignment, but am now out of room on the tie rods and still have some toe-in. This is because I'm using a rack spacer for more angle. I've ordered S14 outers and Z32 inners to remedy this issue. I also replaced my rear trans seal but R154 is notorious for leaking out the back. Now using a W58 rear seal because supposedly it's a little more snug and less likely to leak. I also welded on some shiny tips to my exhaust to prevent the bumper from melting more.

Update:
Well I think I found my heatsoak issue out on my way to a local 804 Nissan meet. I had almost made it to the brewery when I lost all power and popped my main fuse. What happened is my positive wire running from the trunk to the engine bay melted in several spots along the trans tunnel. I don't know how I had overlooked that in doing so I also killed my alternator. Limped it back home and waiting on a new alternator and wiring now. I was extremely lucky there was no fire or worse consequences from this. Running shielding now and keeping the wire on the opposite side the exhaust runs. Here's a pic of two of the hot spots:

Two weeks ago I did my first drift event with the 1J, but before that I had some last minute issues with alternator and had to replace it.

Mechanically the car is near 100%. I still have that weird heatsoak issue and a leaky tailshaft (replaced the seal twice, I think the trans bearing might be on its way out), but finally getting around to some short and simple modifications this car deserves.
Up next for this build in no order:
- 5 lug swap
- 3piece wheels
- aero
- bodywork
- paint
- vert door removal
- new carpet
- possibly reupholster rear seats
- more seat time
This week I prepped for vert door removal. In the early 90s, automatic seat belts were required in all US cars. These were originally coupes from Japan when they were sent to California and modified by ASC to become convertibles. In order to comply with safety regulations, bracing was added under the chassis, in the doors and seat belts placed on the door because of the retractable roof that typically housed the seatbelt tracks.
It's said that each door contains an additional 40 pounds of bracing and seatbelts!
http://i.imgur.com/tLsJnjA.jpg
I'm using Maxima seatbelts and installing them to the chassis. A lot of people use the rear seat belts but I was an idiot and cut those out when installing the roll bar years ago.

Damn dude what the hell caused the wire to melt and arch?
I ran it unshielded directly over my exhaust path (JZ is on the passenger side). It's ran fine for months but i guess after enough heat cycles it started to wear through. I'm lucky I know and should have shielded the wire but it was just a mistake on my part. I now have a new wire, shielded that runs along the driver side instead.

No they don't poke out, they're pretty weak offset. 17x8+30 all around. Looks ok, fits with minimal roll of the stock fenders.

I still haven't completely sorted my cooling . Just was at the track on Sunday and coming off drift runs around 215-220 in 90 degree weather. I cool at idle fine but at speed I'm having trouble too.
Street driving i stay around 180-200. Highway I start creeping up to 210+. I did push it once at 220 to see and sure enough it kept climbing to 230 so i shut it down.
Current setup:
~stock 1JZ VVTI
S13
Flexalite 420 shrouded fans
50/50 toyota red
new OEM Toyota thermostat and water pump
upper and lower ducting
Greddy FMIC
stock oil cooler
Blitz radiator cap
ISIS KA aluminum radiator
No engine undertray
PS cooler mounted to radiator
Temps aren't unbearable but definitely frustrating having to cool down after a run and not just hot lap....
Well this weekend I took a stab at resolving my issues. I flushed out my system, bled it out well, ran straight water with water wetter, and installed a Mishimoto low-temp thermostat.
http://i.imgur.com/zzIDMIN.jpg?1
Although the car did run cooler in town and came back to operating temps quickly, I still got hot at highway speeds. I was positive the lower temp thermostat and water wetter wouldn't change much but had to reassure myself.
Diagnosing this I'm left with either:
- Not enough airflow
- Ineffective radiator
- Bad headgasket
With shrouded Flexalite fans, ducting and wind from traveling at 70mph, I feel that airflow is sufficient. I've compression tested and checked both oil and water and see no signs of a bad headgasket. That leaves us with ineffective radiator. I've ordered an SR Koyo N-Flow radiator. This radiator features cross flow and is a dual pass unit meaning the coolant passes twice across the radiator before exiting. I think this is the last piece of the puzzle. Others have had success with this radiator and I look forward to confirming it as a solution.

interested to see how the N flow works for you. I'd like to get this radiator or some 3 inch thick circle track rad off of summit.
Im running a normal koyo SR rad, low temp thermostat, Spal 3k cfm puller fan and i cut out my rad support to tilt the radiator as far forward as i can.
street driving I am around 170 to 180 with no fan on. on track I get to 210 with no fans, 190 with fans, and in the staging lanes it comes down to 180/185 fairly quickly with the fan on.
maybe your issue isnt enough air flow or room between the rad and motor?

I'm honestly making a lot of these changes based off of your post in 2J swap thread, I'm envious of your temps! haha.
You know I considered that an issue but decided to go a little overkill with going to the koyo n-flow radiator as well. This is the last "pain" from this swap that I've lived with for a year now but it's time to remedy it. Next track day is July 30th so I should have real results to report then.
Radiator will be tilted forward when the koyo goes in as well to avoid hitting the TB coupler. If I had better access to TIG I'd like to shorted my TB eventually to create more room but only have easy access to a MIG.

Honestly, the best thing I ever did for my RB25det swapped S13 was cutting the core support moving the radiator forward an inch or two and running a Taurus fan. I'm pretty sure that is GODS gift to the electric fan world.
tauntdevil
07-15-2016, 09:27 AM
I would recommend putting in vents / air tubes to go around the radiator. Basically just like how you can have tubes for the track car that go from the front bumper to the brake rotors, do the same but have them go to the engine if you are going to keep the electric fans.
Common issue out here is air flow. A lot of people will go with aftermarket radiators and dual fan setups which work great when not moving but the fans normally have very little room to allow air to pass through when on the freeway or moving. Often recommended keeping the clutch fan on most engines due to this. In our state at least (Hell).
We would put the vent tubes in some cars that were dailied and it would work great because it would provide the air needed and they didnt have to get rid of the fans for when they arent moving. Solved many heating issues.
Recommended to try. Shouldnt cost more than about $20 for the Tubes from Home Depot if that.
Love the build. I love verts and want one someday to do a removable hard time too. Something I have been wanting to do for a long time but never have the money or time to do.
Thank you for sharing your build.

Thanks dudes! I really appreciate the advice. I know my Flexalite 420s are rated at around 2500CFM aka the low-speed setting for the Taurus fan. I'll consider that if this SR dual pass radiator doesn't work and will be pitching the radiator forward to avoid the throttle body interference.

Started installing my Koyo SR N-Flow last night. You know when I cut the stock water elbow for the KA radiator, I had a feeling I'd regret cutting it. Interestingly enough, I did notice the Koyo radiator to be slightly thinner than the ISIS KA one, maybe 1/8" or so.
http://i.imgur.com/mGohG9H.jpg?1
Didn't finish last night, gonna stop by Jspec and pull off their water elbow off of a spare 1J they have there. It pays to buy local! The bottom of the radiator is also touching parts of the rad support that need to be clearanced and I have to find a way to deal with that harness under there. Gonna try and reroute under the fans. Maybe this winter I'll finally pull both the fuse boxes into the cabin but it looks like such a pain.
I also cleaned up my wheels, lightly polished on the left and "raw" from VR wheels on the right.

Unfortunately with my radiator tilted forward, it made the install a little tight and I'll have to get creative to reinstall my bumper support bracket.
http://i.imgur.com/peYg7mN.jpg?1
I also began fitting the wheels with a fender roller and torch. Turned out great but tight. These are 18x10.5 +12 wheels but with the maverick bracket have an effective offset of +4. This made fitting my 245/40/18 tires tough so I'm going down to a 235/40 and selling my 245s to a friend. Really trying to avoid overfenders to keep the cost slightly down.
http://i.imgur.com/mV9Tx80.jpg?1
Definitely have some work to do still but things are going well. I'll get some better pictures of everything together once it's back on the ground and driving again.

Bought some fiberglass fenders and started the small amounts of repair needed for the kit. FINALLY getting paint over the winter.

Thanks dude. My buddy's JZX81 *was sweet, he literally sold it this week and picked up a silvia. He wasn't a fan of how it felt drifting, not as nimble as schassis.

Body work and sheet metal wing in progress. First time really using body filler....less is more hahah. Endless sanding but it's going well thanks to good friends telling me what I'm doing wrong haha.
First up was fenders. I bought some +25mm fiberglass fenders locally and they fit terribly as well as weren't wide enough for my application. Ended up going back to the metal fenders, banging them out as far as I could and then applying body filler to smooth it out.
http://i.imgur.com/MJYRheA.jpg
Kit repair is easier than I thought but time consuming.
1. Apply fiberglass cloth and resin.
2. Fill large cracks and repairs with fiberglass reinforced filler.
3. Fill small pin holes and smooth any inconsistencies with regular body filler.
4. Rough patches can be smoothed with 80 grit
5. Smooth whole bumper with 180 so the primer has something to bite into
http://i.imgur.com/ywLRH0b.jpg
Fooled around with cardboard tubs haha. After I relocate my engine harness I plan on doing tubs. These 18s are huge and I like the way tubs look. Probably won't happen until much later this year.

Sheet metal wing went well. I like the idea of adding my own personal touch to the looks of the car so wanted at least one part that I made myself. Was super easy to do and came out nice looking. Better pictures soon.

I might close off the sections you can see the stock wing but for now I'm happy with it.

Paint is taking me forever. I'm doing it myself at a friend's shop who has patiently guided me. A little bit of everything from filling dents, fiberglass repair and rust removal. This is my first time doing a lot of this so it's been a fun challenge. Feel free to ask if you want to know how.
Dents filled and ready for primer

S13 vert's came over from Japan as coupes and were chopped up in CA. They didn't seal them well and are prone to rust. Ground out most of it, applied POR15, and then filled to smooth.
http://i.imgur.com/dqdHRuy.jpg?1
You can see I had two spots of fresh filler I needed to smooth out still.
http://i.imgur.com/LZBdxn4.jpg?1
I then primed the car last weekend. Primer is only needed on areas you repaired but I did do the entire body kit.
http://i.imgur.com/1gn0aPq.jpg?1
Rest of the stock paint has been roughed. I'm letting the primer dry a few days before I sand it smooth. Then I'm going to using a sealer and topcoating this next weekend.

It’s painted! Awesome experience, years of puff bombing bike frames and small stuff has paid off. I decided on single stage paint (Delfleet Essentials) since its worked well on friends’ cars and is cheap. It laid well and can’t wait to reassemble and see how it really came out.
Before wiping and masking. The damage areas aren't that large but primer is sprayed on areas we repaired, easier to connect them all and block smooth.
http://i.imgur.com/5b7d098.jpg?1
I started with the small stuff. Honestly these were more challenging than the car itself and had to have my mentor go over a few where my skill was running out haha.
http://i.imgur.com/KBdZFsj.jpg
On to the car. Everything is sprayed with a sealer before so that’s why it appears gray. Started with the jams and then work to full coverage. Poor photo quality.

I won’t lie I’m a little nervous about the color but will hold off on judgement until it’s all back together. I took the small pieces outside and really liked how they came out but the body looks like a firetruck or toy car haha.

The car is mostly done and it's taking some time to finish the last bits of the car. Kit is just thrown on in most pics so ignore some of the body gaps. Came out exactly like I wanted it to. A few small runs I can color sand out but pretty happy for my first time spraying a car. This single stage paint covered pretty well for being a red.

Not much left to be done before spring is here. General maintenance, skid plate, and hopefully hydro ebrake. I also have a 4.36 R&P ready to go in but not sure when I'll tackle that job.
Windshield molding was an absolute pain but the rust is gone there now....or at least repaired haha. TBD if i got a water tight seal.

Been a busy few months with plenty of ups and downs. The car hasn't changed much other than the addition of another caliper and the Villains handbrake. Such an awesome upgrade, I've never drifting with a handbrake so it's been fun learning to use it. Probably could use a steering wheel, sits really close to the stock one.

Found out that hotlapping in hot, humid weather would kill my stock turbo. I’m now debating between highflowing my CT15B, Tomei M8280, or just going top mount. Leaning towards top mount.
http://i.imgur.com/gyRChWg.jpg
It was interesting that the turbo did go. My car has always felt a little sluggish and lacks the torque everyone online rants and raves about with the VVTI 1Js. I had a few friends drive my car and they agreed. It made power for sure but felt like a T25 SR and constantly needed to be clutch kicked even with high rear tire pressure. I’m excited to start over a bit with the new setup coming soon.
How it sits for now. Gonna pull the turbo to see the damage but need to save a bit before buying the new setup.

A lot of small detail jobs. I'd really like to go back through and clean up some wiring and tuck the fuse boxes. Mechanically I plan on pulling the engine, tubing the fenders, painting the engine bay, moving the fuel lines to drivers side and just general tuck and clean of the bay.
I'm gonna limp by on stock fuel and ecu for a bit more. Not really prepared for standalone and want to get better at focusing more on the details of a few jobs instead of rushing through my typical laundry list of things. I'm finding that I really enjoy being more meticulous with each modification as opposed to completing it as quick as possible.

Oh and it only seems fitting I add some closure to the paint process of the car. My drift "team", aka friends who painted their cars the same color, also finished their paint. Here we are at Low Style Heroes V1 being stance kids.

An awesome friend gave me a Holset H1C that I'm gonna try and use. This is the 8 blade variant with very similar performance to an hx35. It's got a massive 18cm rear housing that I'm looking to swap out for either the bullseye 0.7a/r or Tims turbo 9cm one. Any input is greatly appreciated.

18cm housing is huge. I went from a 16cm to a 9cm. The 9cm was still laggy but not as bad. On a basic RB I was seeing full boost around 4500. It was still a good setup for the price.

Just did Killer Dowel Pin on it as well as some other maintenance. I really like driving it around.
Remaining winter build includes finally installing an aftermarket steering wheel, roll center correction kit and possible J-pipe delete on the 1J (just makes more intake noise).

I just went through and didn't see if the SR style N flow solved the overheating issues? Im tossing my 1J in next weekend and was still debating on using my KA radiator or not. I already cut the core support, mainly to fit the 2 12" Spal fans.
bmaddock
01-12-2018, 12:07 PM
I believe it did help but I also went to HMIC at the same time. Enough guys run KA radiators that I think the N-flo isn't necessary.
Just make sure you have good airflow to the rad. Before I had a beat-up greddy FMIC a good foot in front of the radiator so I think the air was stalling and forced to rely on electric fans only. Direct airflow is so much more capable of removing heat.
If your budget can afford it, look into adding an oil cooler as well. I forgot to mention I'm finally installing that this winter because I believe that was how I killed my first turbo hotlapping.

Winter rebuild went well and I'm happy with the result. Took a lot of work that most people won't pick up on as different from last year but really excited about it all.
Greddy oil cooler sandwich plate
https://i.imgur.com/uwrU9IK.jpg?1
Interior all apart due to tucked harness. Good experience but damn was this painful.... when I inevitably redo all of this I wish I just made the investment to going with a complete custom harness such as the Painless wiring kit.

GK RCC kit forced my 18s out too far for stock fenders so rocking my friends R33 17s this year.

Used some ugly corner brace to make a simple bracket for oil cooler. Will likely spray this black during the summer so that you don't see it as easy.

The car is holding up well. Most of this year was keeping the body kit together, changing tires and driving the damn thing. Couldn't be happier with how it performs. A stock 1j, gktech roll center correction and a nice bucket seat.
Really excited to start posting again. I've purchased a TIG welder and plan on really taking advantage of it. Winter build list and preview for the next following posts:
- Body work (fenders, hood, front bumper)
- Larger power steering cooler
- Swirl pot in the upper radiator elbow
- Full cage
- Fresh fluids
