View Full Version : sr20det internals reliability

i know that the sr20det stock bottom end can actually withstand up to around 400hp or something like that.
here is wat im wondering though, how reliable would it be to run around 300rwhp with a stock bottom end? im sure the reliability factor would be quite low.
a friend of mine plans on buying a redtop sr20det, n since they are somewhat old engines by now, i was wondering just how long those would last with their stock internals.
also, up until wat hp range are the stock cams any good? valves, springs, and retainers?
how bout the ecu? i know that the Z32 MAF is used to help with air flow up until around 450hp, and thats good enough for me, but will piggyback systems do good enough for tuning and controlling or will we need an EMS unit?
im sorry for all the questions but ive searched around and really havent seen any info on just up to where can the stock internals be pushed and their reliability factors. he wants to build a daily driver car thats reliable but that can perform well at the same time (around 320rwhp max).
so how bout some feedback on the stock internals? help is very much appreciated.
SR20DET can be VERY reliable with PROPER fuel management.
And by proper fuel management, I am talking about a ECU Retune, proper mafs, and proper fuel supply (pump, injectors, etc)

yeah i know of acouple people that have 350-400 on stock internals, however, you should have a good fuel managment system(ecu, injeceters, full pump) and a upgraded maf
my car has a 307whp setup... it's been running for 17 000km yet and so far, still running very well.

the fuel system is an obvious thing on any car being pushed a bit more than it was originally produced for. its kinda obvious, and whoever doesnt know this should stay away from cars.
anyhow.... as far as the ECU tuning goes, i know its not something thats exactly cheap. so thats why my main concerns are wether or not will i need to seriously retune the ECU, or if piggyback systems will get the job done just fine. THATS my other real concern. thanks.
ECU retune... piggy back does the job, but not fine.

well, my friend wants to be able to operate the controls of the car, such as its boost levels and all. thats why i like the whole piggyback idea. set all settings to "stock" for daily driving (just in case he steps hard on the gas for cutting through traffic without using too much gas) and changing it all to "race" when hes at the track, or when hes just plain bored around the neighborhood.
would it then be better to have the piggybacks or is the ecu still better even though it cant be switched back and forth (unless an EMS is bought.... but thats not cheap at all)?
ECU is still better.
My ECU is tuned for my injectors and mafs... I can run 7psi or 19 psi with the same ecu.
4 different maps on it... custom made by a friend

tuning is KEY.
Stock SR20DET internals have been PROVEN to hold up to over 500whp.
This is, of course, with proper fuel management, engine management, intercooling, etc etc etc.
Go look up Secret Services' ~539whp SR.

539whp but who's counting? haha

Phase2Motortrend has hit 525whp on a stock bottom end SR. However a quote from their site, Without precise tuning and fuel system, the SR motor can still blow up just like popcorn in a microwave.

any car that is not appropiately tuned can blow up easily.... dont need to keep saying "master of the obvious" things.....
anyhow
i read something about that stock ecu with 4 different maps on it somewhere before... not sure if it was in this forum or another one..... but i do certainly remember someone doing it. can it be bought or would i have to talk with someone and talk some business? i certainly wouldnt mind chceking that out, even for my own car :D
also, its nice that some people have achieved such high numbers with stock internals, but remember, my friend is making a daily driver that is going to be used in the tropics, not a 5 minute use per week car.

You asked a question I gave a reference and their quote. Just trying to help you out. Figured you might want to know of another company that has done it, as those would probably be the best people to talk to about it. Don't expect much help if your gonna try and be dick. There are plenty of those in this forum already who are alot better at it then you.

dont need to get all rowdy either.... geez.... your temper is worse than my g/f's on her period. im not even trying to be a dick, but i kinda got the point already about high numbers on stock bottom end and the whole fuel management thing, its old news.
