I don't know about in california, but here you can go to any parts store and get a r134a kit.....even if your car was r12 you can convert it..it comes with the adapters for it and all you do is run the car, put the ac on high, and attatch the charge assemble to the low pressure side of the compressor...once you have the 134a adapters on it you can't possibly hook it up wrong cause they're different... and they come with special leak stopping fluids already in the refrigerant cans..... they're like 30 bucks... good luck..

I asked a few places down here if they could refill my freon, they said the AC was shot, something with the compressor, but i could still refill the freon. However those shops said they wouldn't do it for legality reasons, freons a hazardous substance and they didn't want it leaking out.
Im sorry R134a blows, see if you can get Freeze12, an alternative to R12, i read about it on rx7club.com.
R134 doesnt really blow when the car comes stock with it, but when you retrofit it in a system it wasnt made for 100%, it doesnt get as cold.

I can definately vouch for that. R134a sucks retrofitted. It would get cold as long as I kept the rpm's above about 2500
