Weird problem and I can't for the life of me figure it out.

Entire interior of the car was out over the winter; cleaning mostly and then I put it back together.

Steering column fit fine before, and the front mounts that are just behind the ignition that mount the column to the chassis and dash support bar had the bolts about in the middle of them. There's about an inch of room for the bolts to slide back and forth, and mine were just about in the middle

The rear mount just above the brake pedal doesn't have any adjust-ability so there's nothing that could have changed there

My problem is now that I've put the steering column back in, the splines are in the steering rack, the boot that keeps dirt out of the passenger compartment is on, the non-adjustable mount by the brake pedal is fine, but the top mounts are 3/4" off of were they used to be. This is an issue because I can't get the top portion bolted in because it's about 1/4-3/8" short of the bolt hole.

I have NO FREAKING IDEA how this could even happen. The dash support and the chassis line up fine, so I don't think either of those changed. The lower mounting point is fixed and can't change, it's just like the steering column got 3/4" shorter between the two mounting points. Is there any way for this thing to adjust itself somehow?

Need to get a steering wheel mounted so I can drive the car, but the bolts are 3/4" off where they used to sit on the top adjustable mounts, and 1/4" short of even being able to screw them in at all. ANY help or ideas would be appreciated, I can't find any info anywhere about this happening to anyone else

when i removed mine, i had a very difficult time re-installing it. the issue i had was the front mounting holes were about 3/4" too far away, like i couldn't push the steering rack in far enough to make the holes line up.

took some persuasion, but it got lined up.

take your time, it will go back in

I ended up removing the whole inner splined portion and mounting that in the steering rack. Found out the housing portion that mounts in the passenger compartment fit fine, so I did the steering rack then fanagled the two pieces back together and bolted it up.

Huge PITA
