s13 blacktop vs. s13 redtop

i was wondering what sr20det was better, blacktop or redtop? and wats the difference between the engine?

it depends on which version of the blacktop ur talking about though, the s13 one has nuthin special about it, while the newer ones (s14 and 15) have the VTC system. the redtop has a pentroof design head.

the s14 blacktop with its VTC does have 15 more hp over the s13 redtop with pentroof, but only cuz of the bigger turbo. the VTC has been proven not to be THAT much of a big advantage.

The S13 black-tops are not just newer than the red-tops, IIRC there's a couple differences. Do a SEARCH for them.

crank case design is different. black top has some webbing/heat sink fins or some shit on the block. red tops dont

I believe the O2 sensors are different between the two as well, although this would not be a benefit or negative.

blacktop has cooling channels in the pistons...same pistons as the gtir..

Oil pick-up on the blacktop is slotted unlike the redtop (dented oilpan = dead motor).

Wiring is only different on the 97 and up blacktop cuz the ECU pin outs are different. As for the O2 Sensor...theres the skinny and the fatty ones. Cant remember which ones on which but it doesnt really matter since they both have the same plugs. Which one is better??? Iono...depends on how you look at it. You get a blacktop and you know its off the 180sx...and guess what...more than likely its been wanged on since most 180sx in japan are used to drift. Redtops in the silvias on the other hand...you might get lucky and get ol Grand Pa Bob's silvia which is still mint. I bought a blacktop thinking itll be more dependable but yah lets say who ever had it b4 me had fun with it. Shiet didnt last 2 months in my car.

I dont need to do a search, i have a blacktop and did a full swap myself, including wiring.

I contacted both Jeff and Doug at HeavyThrottle prior to getting a 98 180sx blacktop, they both confirmed that the wiring diagram is THE SAME. The ECU pinouts may be different, but I followed the same wiring diagram as everyone else (heavythrottle faq). Yes, the wiring (colors u splice together) is the same as what is on the heavythrottle faq. At least it worked out for me.

so is it possible to use a blacktop motor with redtop wiring? I am asking because i am planning to do just so. I have a redtop in s14 chasis and was wondering if it was possible to just swap in a blacktop head and block.

so your saying pracatlly the s13 red and s13 black are the same and will fit into the same chasis with no problem? why are redtops more popular than blacktops if blacktops are more suprieror?

I dont know about your blacktop, but my black top came stock with 6 individual throttle bodies.

I don't know about that, I was JUST at autoconnection on sat and was talking to them about a redtop motor they were parting out and the ECU's they had for the red and black tops were different, I don't think he was putting a S14 blacktop in the 180sx either. I was looking right at them.

Either way, there isn't much difference between the two. I'm going red top cause it's cheaper.
