How do you safely jack up the rear of the car?

I keep seeing pictures of people jacking up just the rear of their cars.

How do you do it?

Are chocks enough to keep the car from rolling off the jacks?

After I forgot to break the lugs loose before jacking up the car a few times, I devised a system where I wedge a 4x2 between the seat and the brake pedal to keep the brakes on, but I somehow don't trust a 4x2 wedge to keep the car from rolling onto me.

I always jack up the rear from the right rear tow hook, no chocks or anything. If I forget to break the lugs I just pull the ebrake up.

How about the front?
I usually use the front subframe but my car is too low for me to do it without first jacking up the side of the car.

Tow hook once again duder Use the one on corner. Normally always have to roll up on a brick or wood if car too low

I know how to jack up the car.

My question is how do you SAFELY jack up the rear only?

I see dudes do this when they are changing tires at drift events and when dropping the rear subframe.

You see, when you jack up the front, you have the rear gears locked in 1st gear and the handbrake, but you have absolutely no way to lock the front wheels when you jack up the back.

So how do you do it safely?

Chock the wheels. Buy a crappy plastic set from auto zone or the like for < $10. Then take the pair and put them on both sides of one wheel. Buy a second if it makes you feel better.

If you have one large chock, put it behind the wheel. When you jack the rear, it will move backwards. A 2x4 is not sufficient for this.

If you want to get super cheap, or if you're in a pinch, use a brick from your neighbor.

The front of the car is held in place by the jackstandsif you're jacking the rear only, use the triangle-shaped chocks on both sides of at least 1 front wheel (both is better)I jack the rear end by the rear diff. The tow hook is not a jack point. if the car is too low, lift by the tow hook to get a 2x8 or two under each wheel and then lift by the rear diff

I have 2 huuuuge steel chocks from Harbor Freight. So if I just chock the front wheels, I'm good right?

HA i never use wheel chocks when lifting rear,but that's my choice never once had a problem. I am also not going to go under car though

If you get a low profile jack it slides right under my diff, and i can jack the rear up and its pretty evenly balanced ( jack has a big flat jack point). However, this is only used to get the car off the ground, then i put jack stands under the subframe if i need to get under it.
All this is done on a level surface and although i can see the benefit of chocking the wheels, i normally skip it for small jobs.

put chocks up front then lift it up from the diff. then place jack stands on the sway bar "D" link.

Make sure you are on a flat and even surface, no inclines or declines. Put chocks in the front and the back of the front tires. I usually just kick a towel under the tires or jack up front at the frame and put jacks in front, then lift rear from diff and put jacks in rear, lift whole car. If not sure about safety, stick wheels under the car incase you are that concerned.

If i'm not getting under the car and just changing wheels I just leave it on the jack with no wheel chocks, the jack really doesn't move on asphalt with the cars weight on it. Who am I kidding I have a bad habit of getting under cars without jack stands anyways.
