Hello,
I have an 89' 240sx. I had my car on Jack stands the other day and noticed both my rear tires spun. I thought stock s13 only spun 1 tire.
Please help me understand if this is normal or he I have an LSD installed.
Thanks

Go out and try it in a safe area hahaha
Did you try spinning the rear tires in both directions?

Did they spin the same direction or did they spin opposite of each other? Same direction = diff. Opposite = open diff

@OP you want to know if you have an LSD that works. For that, do a burnout.
Having a VLSD is nice, having a VLSD that works is better.

Is there a HICAS sticker on the back of your car? If yes, the car has a viscous lsd.
If not, answer the question fliprayzin240sx asked.

I have been doing some research. Seems like 89-90 didn't come with lsd, but the mechanic I bought the car off could have put one on.
I don't think I have a hicas sticker. I did have abs. So there could have been a sport package added on at time of purchase.
I'll have to test it out in 2 weeks once I get back home

I had my brother in law look at the tires. I don't think he was looking to see which direction they were going

Get 1 tire on pavement, the other on grass. Rev high, dump the clutch. If you just sit there, you do not have a (working) VLSD.

Does it matter which tire is on the pavement?

Lift the rear tires off the ground, put trans in neutral.
Test 1 Spin drivers wheel, look at the direction the passenger wheel spins.
Test 2, have someone hold the passengers wheel while you spin the drivers wheel.
Test 3, remove diff and look inside.
You could also spin the drive shaft and look at the direction the wheels spin.
The drive wheel is the driver side usdm, iirc
That wheel should be in the grass, mud or snow for the dump test. If not try both wheels.

I highly doubt that. He would have mentioned it, and you would have paid for it one way or another.

There is no sport package, so no.
Either way, drive around, then find an empty place and do a burnout. 1 tyre mark = open diff or dead VLSD, 2 marks = working LSD.
Mind you, OEM VLSDs are non serviceable, and most of them are already done for now. They usually overheat and kill their oil (NOT the diff casing oil) after 60.000km. These OEM VLSDs are supposed to help transfer power in difficult conditions, like rain or snow. They won't work well after a couple of turns once you try to put some power through them.

What he said^
Jack up the rear and try spinning the wheel. If both tires spin in the same direction you have a LSD/VLSD. If one tire spins the opposite way, you have an open diff.
