I'm trying to figure out why my VH45 leaks oil while running. And by leaks I mean it pukes it out pretty good. It's coming from behind the crank pulley, AKA the front main seal. I checked out the seal and the back of the crank pulley, both look good.

Would it be because I have it impacted on instead of having it torqued down to OEM 275 lb/ft of torque????

If its leaking that bad, I would wonder if the seal used is correct? Is it a new seal for the appropriate make/model/year. Is the crankshaft pulley also the correct one for the make/model/year? That may sound crazy, but who knows what people do when selling or putting together engines these days. Also, is the crankshaft perhaps out of balance, with a V-8 you have the potential to develop a lot of stress and strain along it, especially if its been driven like a rent-a-car previously. Those are my thoughts, but i could be way off...

Yes it's the correct seal and crank pulley.

Make sure you've applied a quality grease to the seal or crank pulley before re-installing, other than that it could be some type of oil pump or oil circulation issue

looks like you have a good amount of wear on the crank seal surface of the pulley.. i had a micro groove that you couldn't even feel with a finger nail, but it was a steady drip. easily a 12" puddle of oil after a minute of run time.
i sanded it back to a mirror finish with staggering sand paper. and it fixed my leak.

To be honest, if the seal is old enough, why not just replace it?.?. Obviously there is something wrong w/ it. The seal can't be more than $15.
