View Full Version : Car sometimes won't give up key

This is a problem I've been having for a while with my '95 base model. Sometimes, I park her, put her in park, pull up the e-brake, and turn off the car, only to find that the key won't go the last click and come out of the ignition. Usually, it's solvable by startin the car again and shifting back into D, dropping the brake, and ther reversing the process. It, however, sometimes takes several tries. Also, turning the wheel seems to have no effect on the key. (Removing the possibility that it's a wheel lock thing)

Any idea what's going on?

It sounds like perhaps the tumblers in your ignition are worn or broken causing the key not to release. Otherwise, can't help you since you have an auto. :(

Go to wal-mart where they have the key copy place, they have some graphite lube there. Follow the instructions on the tube.

Wow, is that all it is? I was a little concerned that there might be a problem, as my car is getting its Manual put in as we speak.

I used to have that problem with my 95 SE. My key would get stuck and I couldnt turn it at all though. All it took was shaking the steering wheel a little bit to dislodge the key. Doesn't happen a lot though..

Autos have an electronic lock that won't let you take the key out unless the car is in Park. More than likely that's your suspect. Try wiggling the shifter around in Park to see if the key will come out. If not, you might want to try removing the electronic lock altogether.

I used it in all of my cars locks. Made a world of difference in the drivers side door and the ignition.
