Hey guys,

swapped a S13 SR20DET redtop in my ca18det RS13.

problem is: i dont get a correct rpm - jumping around when starting, 0 when running

- i put in a resistor -> works in my buddys car, but not in mine
- other gauge -> no
- other ECU -> no

im out of ideas.
i unplugged the dash and took new wires + / - and signal from ecu
still acting as box of shit. needle is zero or bouncing a bit an goes back to zero then.

also checked the CAS (engine running fine anyways) and got perfect ground/12V/ and signals between 0.1 and 5v as mentioned in the service book.

no fuqin idea whats wrong with my tach signal.
also tested another ECU/cluster -> same problem

2015 edit:
rewired the complete car, throw my old harness into the trash can (lower harness, new sr20 harness, and inside/bay harness)
triplechecked the pinouts and grounds.

nobody?
tested cas to ecu -> ok
ecu to dash -> ok

only thing i have in mind is to hook up my laptop to my nistune and see if i got a proper signal there.

but no idea what then :I

So did nistune register a tach signal?
If so you should trace the wire running from the ecu. Run a new wire if you have too.
Do all of the other things on the cluster work, speed, trip turn signals etc.?

have to check nistune about the rpm, the one who mapped the car doesnt remember what he saw on nistune.
but also tried another ECU with nistune, that works for my m8 - nothing for me tho.

NEW VIDEO:
tried another cluster, and this time the needle jumps to 1000rpm and stays there until engine is off.
without the 10k resistor nothing happens.

could the CAS cause this problems?

What did nistune register?
Swapping clusters, means at that end there's a problem but what about the other end. And yeah a cas could be the issue but nistune would be the same if it's the cas. That means the problem is in between. Not really in between but you should know what I'm saying. If not Check nistune.

SOLVED! ECU signal exit was half damaged. some electronic specialist fixed it for fifty bucks
