i have the typical 240sx munchies around the exhaust collector on the frame and floor pan above it. The heating and cooling of these areas combined with wintry driving caused the frame on that side to weaken and eventually break apart, as well as the floorpan, leaving me effectively missing about five inches of frame on the driver side right up front, and a palm sized hole in the floor above it.

The floor im not too concerned with, ive patched up floors before far worse. As for the "frame" im encountering small problems elsewhere. For example there are small holes, very small ones, showing on the passenger side frame section facing the wheel, although it feels solid.

anyhow

the local welding shop wants $500 to fix the damage to the frame and theyll do the floor also for that price. They had the car in the air to give me this estimate and we both took a look, other than this small shit, the car is in exceptional shape underneath.

my question is: for the sake of $500, should i try and get a mechanic friend who can weld to grind the bad spot off the frame and fabricate a piece to fit in place? what would the frame welding people do that a normal do-it-yourself welder couldnt do?? OR should i bite the bullet and just take it in.

Anyone ever encounter this before? I saw it and freaked, but it is repairable and its not worth gettin rid of the car over, although i think this settles it- no more winters.

thanks

does your friend have enough experiance that you trust him to do a professional job? if not then go to the welding shop. simple as that.
