View Full Version : Driveshaft couple loose, possibly the reason for low speed shake?

Ok, could use some advice here, had a shake at low speeds that started getting worse, put my car on a buddy's lift and this is what I see on the driveshaft coupler right after the trans, the bolts are loose and bent, and there is about a 1 inch gap where it isn't tight, I'm wondering if anyone can tell me what's going on here, and what I can do to remedy it, it doesn't seem like either side can move to try to pull it tight, but it does look like the exposed shaft behind the coupler is clean like it was slid in all the way at one point, any info would be appreciated, thank you

Sounds like the bolts vibrated loose. Just get new bolts and make sure to use some locktite when you install the new bolts.

Um does anyone else notice those aren't factory bolts( way too long)?? Looks like someone gerry rigged it cause it's not the right drive shaft (too short), your only just now feeling the vibrantions cause it puked a bolt and ones now bent it looks like. Get a proper drive shaft one piece or the correct stock one.

I was gonna say this exact thing. Was the car originally automatic?

Who every sold you that car, should shot in the face with rock salt at six feet!
I also hold the op responsible because the clackity clackity sound was probably present shorty after purchase.

yes, the car was originally an auto, so, it would have a shorter drive shaft then? and i bought the car not running, just got it running when i noticed the shake, the one missing bolt is the one i took out to get some new ones. stock manual s13 driveshaft should work with an rb20 right?

No, no no no. The length of the shaft has nothing to do with the fact that there are washers...
Think about it. if the shaft was shorter the washers would be between the two mating surfaces. not at the head of the bolts.
Now that I type that it's clear there aren't washers on that anyway.
Point being, the bolts are just too long. has nothing to do with the shaft length.
Get the correct bolts or give me a shout and I'll send you a set of the bolts you need.
It's happened to me before and it's a big deal in the sense that you don't want to drive with this coming apart.

but even with the correct length bolts, wouldnt there still be that 1 inch gap where they arent mating up?

The input shaft doesnt have to sit all the way in/flush to the tail shaft. There's supposed to be some space.

Ah I see now, yeah. Your shaft is short dude. Duh, thats what I was saying!
but no, really. I thought the pic was the shaft slid out because of the bolt. Unfortunately you do have the wrong shaft, or atleast front half. not sure of the reprocussions of trying to continue to run that way but I wouldn't personally...
measure it from front to back and compare to online specs
