A starter that is goin bad is usually freezing up on the inside, its a little axle that spins the flywheel, when it freezes the axle has trouble moving on start. when you hit it with a hammer as you start it, it frees the "axle" up and will allow it to revolve thus starting the car. from experience (not mine, but my friends and family) buying a refurbashed starter is a waste of time- always get a brand new one witha lifetime warranty

"solenoid"
and it's not that it doesn't spin, solenoids move axially. it has to move axially to engage the flywheel gear first, then the motor turns the flywheel gear and thus the flywheel.

commutator
commutator is what the brushes are in contact with.
i work at an autoparts store and would like to know why you think referb is bad? i've sold hundreds of starters and alternators and i've had only a handful come back. i dont think that the quality you get from the dealer is going to be an better than what i sell. when they remanufacture them they replace EVERYTHIING. mean that the brushes are replaced, the commutator is trued, new magnets are put in, new solenoid, and bushings. the gear is also replaced if it was abused.
