View Full Version : S14 5lug/Z32 brakes/Diff complex situation...

I recently picked up an automatic S14 base model

Blown KA Block so I towed her home...

I purchased some 5 lug hubs but the seller said for 50 bucks more we would give me the whole spindle with rotors and Z32 rotors and calipers on the rear.

Went to my local tire shop and broke them down....

Here's what I got:

I have done so many searches and I see that the hubs were bolted onto an S14 knuckle.

I planned on throwing away the axles (due to torn boots) but it may help answer my question.

What VLSD will work with the set up I purchased?:

Z32 tabbed 5 lug hubs
S14 knuckles

Will I need a ABS Driveshaft?

The axles boots will be repaired just wondering what VLSD will go with these inputs/output shafts.

I have a feeling a Z32 V-LSD will work for this application.

The ABS situation, I am not entirely sure on. However, from my limited knowledge, the rear diff and/or housing (ABS or not) will dictate what driveshaft you run (ABS housing/diff, ABS driveshaft and the opposite is true by definition).

Goodluck!

I currently have a Z32 VLSD with non ABS 1 piece driveshaft and Z32 5 lug with S14 rear brakes (you have Z32 rear brake setup), if that helps any.

NA Z32 vlsd will work, but the axles will not if they are from a NA z32. To use a NA Z32 vlsd you will need the 5 bolt flange axles from a J30 or the JDM axles for a s-chassis. As long as the hubs you have are z32 NA rear hubs then you can run pretty much any vlsd that would bolt into any s-chassis.

If you want to re-use the axles you have in the picture which look to be factory S14 tri flange 6-bolt axles, you will need a factory vlsd out of a USDM s-chassis.

Driveshaft depends on the rear diff you end up getting. If I remember correctly ABS diffs are longer so you will need a shorter driveshaft if you use a ABS diff. If you have your stock 2 piece one you can always mock it up and see if it fits correctly.

This may help:

As for your rear brakes if you didn't know:

Make sure to order R33 rear ebrake cables if you want a working ebrake w/ the z32 rear drum assemblies.

Thanks for taking the time to help...

Here's the axle bolt pattern

Just found out from the seller.

He believes they were on a J30 VLSD

Those look like OEM USDM stock S-chassis axles. J30 axles are usually 5 flange 5 bolt axles, looks like a star vs the USDM triple flange 6 bolt axles which you have.

Meaning if you want a VLSD using your existing axles, you will need to get new axles or find a OEM USDM factory one.

I tend not to take the word of the old owner saying things "I THINK this or that" unless it was very well documented on a mod list describing what parts were changed and modified etc.

What axle and flanges work with the Z32 diff?? I have a feeling the ones you have ;)

Not all J30 axles were 5 bolt.

One axle is going to be longer than the other, as they are not symmetrical.

There are plenty of diff/axle/drivetrain threads on this very site to help you determine what you need to do. Take some time to research and learn about your car.

Last I checked, I think the left is longer than the right (the Diff itself is offset to one side. Something which is very evident once you remove the cover as well).

You are Correct, I didn't remember the years but yes 92-94 J30 Axles are 5 bolt. 95-96 are the 6 bolt.

J30 or any six bolt axle will work. That way you have a better chance of finding one

Honestly just get a s14 abs VLSD and abs driveshaft all headaches eliminated. S14 is stock 6 bolt.
