well, based on rank id say any HVLP gun by Sata, Iwata, Devilbiss most guys swear by Sata once they own one, ive only had devilbiss(ive got the new plus series) and im pretty new to the painting world so its a good starter gun. Id just get him money and let him decide(tell him how he has to spend it though =) since its kind of a personal preference and how you spray.

1.3mm tip is small, well too me it is. I would suggest a 1.5mm tip for repainting a car.

I got a gravity feed HVLP made by RHINO for about $40 ... but that was because i dropped $340 on paint supplies and paint. i also got a I got a large one (regular size) and then a smaller size one . The large one has a 1.4MM tip (recommended by PPG certified paint store and the pamplets i got) and the smaller one has a 1.3MM tip.. im using that one for door jams.. inside trunk .. small stuff. I also got a pressure regular as well.

Look around.. all those guns are the same... if you dont plan on using it THAT much go get a cheap HVLP gravity feed and go for it.

take him with you to the local body supply store and let him pick on out. you can get a good basic starter gun for like 250, atleast around here you can. It won't be a sata but would work good .

EOne-1.5mm jesus man, little bit of a hoser?

yeah, most decent guns spray good when new, its just when being constantly used that quality shines through. Sata's are great and can spray like brand new after being rebuilt....devilbiss uses a lot of plastic in their guns and it just isnt the same after using it alot.

since I know nothing about auto painting, let me run this by you guys.

In airbrushing, I use 2 brushes, my nice badger dual action, and a crappy $14 single action beginner brush for larger coverage areas that dont require detail... the crappy brushes die out after 20oz or so.... I just think of them as a disposable brush.

If i were to get a harbor freight HPLV gun (read as: crappy), BUT was only going to use it once, and thought of it as a disposable item, would it be worthwhile? Or would the lesser quality be reflected in the quality of the paint going on? (no sputtering, webbing, etc)

I think for a one time or two time car paint usage (does that make sense haha?) going with a cheap one works well. The lady at the PPG store told me that all the guns are pretty much the same, its just that the higher end ones have better parts for longtime usage.
