thats some nice pics man!
mike can i ask you some questions?
up to what zoom do you have in you camera?
what shutter speed are you using? i cant seem to find the right shutter speed where in the car is in focus while the backround is blurred.
thanks!

Thanks -- I told you I'd see you out there sooner or later :D. Sarah said you were making it easy to take all those pics of you with all the early sideways entries. Looked really good out there!

Thanks for the kind words, I'll pass em on to the gf.
The lens is a 75-300mm, but since the camera's sensor is smaller than a 35mm frame it has an effective range of 120-480mm (1.6 crop factor). Pretty long reach, so it's great for these types of events.

I believe she was using on average, between 1/125-1/200 shutter speeds (i can double check the exif info later to make sure thats accurate), but even with the aperture dialed down to f22 and iso 100 it was so sunny out that it required a neutral density filter to get the shutter speed low enough. And of course, for most of those shots she was panning with the car to keep it sharp and to give the bg some motion blur.

Or were you talking about the pics with shallow DoF? Where the background wasn't motion blurred, but out of focus? For those I think she was just at the longest range of the zoom lens. You can also use the widest open aperture on your lens, but it was way too bright out there that day. There were also mad heat waves that helped blur/distort the background. Man I miss having a car with working AC... heh.

thanks for the info man! i just got my digicam and still quite dont know how to make with the effects. when i checked out the info on my pics, the shutter speed was set in 1/1000! thats why everything is "fozen". it was set at "sports" setting anyways. next time, ill put it in full manual and adjust the shutter speed myself.

Ahhh 1/1000... that would do it :) Good luck next time!
