View Full Version : Is it possible to give a S13 airbags?

For the safety concern my mother has, would it be possible to upgrade a S13 with airbags?
I was thinking that one could possibly get a S14 steering wheel and have that?
I know you'd probably need a S14 wiring harness, and all the airbag stuff from the S14, but is it doable?
If anyone knows ANYONE who has done this, let me know.
Thanks in advance,

why the S13 has a higher crash rating than the S14 anyways not to mention air bags are not everything they are cracked up to be
the theory is feasable but you would need all of the other parts to do it as well if you hook it up wrong it will blow up causing serious injury you need the impact sensor, trigger relay and the wiring harnesses to hook it all up i am not sure what else is wiried into the system suffice it to say you would probably spend more on the addition of an airbag than the car is worth
search for airbag injuries on google show the pics to your mom somthing tells me that she might change her mind

Want to tell that to my mom?
i'll pay-pal ya 5$.
heh.. nah
My mom is just very protective. Very.
I was just curious if this was doable. Granted airbags aren't all they're cracked up to be, but it would be an interesting project.

Way too much fabrication would have to be put into it (think about the wiring, and tripping the air bag pump under certain acceleration conditions....then think about setting up the air bag pump(compressed air..whatever), packing the air bag, fitting the steering wheel and rack, mounting the censor). My opinion is you would be much safer prior to ghetto engineering your own air bag solution than after.

good call.
I was just thinking there could possibly be some easy swap since so much is swappable on 240s

The kouki 180SX had a driver's side airbag. The steering wheel looks the same as a '90s Maxima... actually I think it's the same one as the R33 Skyline.
Rigging airbags into a car that didn't have them originally is tough, though. Like others said, if the impact sensors aren't just right, they could go off.
Show your mom the crash test ratings. They're on the NHTSA (http://www.nhtsa.gov) web site. The S13 gets 5 stars for driver frontal impact safety... and that's with the pathetic stock seat belts. Upgrade to the non-motorized belts from a Canadian S13 or an S14 and it's an extremely safe car!
I'm putting a roll bar and harnesses in mine, but, that's not a street thing...

yes, i would first get rid of those stupid automatic seatbelts, sure they supposedly make your insurance go down, but i feel much safer with my manual s14 seatbelts,

They reduce your insurance because it's a "passive restraint" - there's less chance of someone being in the car with NO seatbelts.
A correctly worn manual seatbelt will be safer, because it holds you in tighter.

I hate airbags. I have known too many freinds to have their original equipment airbag randomly blow up in their face while going down the highway,or whatever. I personally have had my head pushed through a windsheild by one;My seatbelt didn't lock properly and...yeah its a long story. Airbags suck dude, really.

Get the S15 Wheel off ebay it's mad tight. Get a tilt switch for a alarm system and bolt it to the front bumper and wire it up!
Get a solid non reclining racing seat, 4point roll cage and harnesses and call it a day.

wtf, haha, just tell your mom and show her that the s13 without airbags got better crash test ratings, and tell her your going to replace the crappy automatic seatbelts with better manual ones.

if you use harnesses without a rollbar you are gonna die if your car ever flips. thats LESS safe then just using the stock ones.
getting hit with an airbag is akin to running full force into a wall. don't fuck with them at all, its not worth it. they don't work properly in vehicles that they weren't designed for anyway. it will make your car less safe.
why don't you just grow some balls and tell your mom its your money and your life and she needs to fuck off and let you drive what you want, which is a safe car anyway, either that or buy a volvo and chill out.
