View Full Version : Much needed clutch advice

Well I've searched and searched for the last month now for feedback on certain clutches and the information I've gotten out of it was a little too jumpy and vague so I'd like to ask the question directly related to my situation.
I'm replacing the clutch in my S13 redtop SR20DET and looking for a bit of advice. I know this has been covered, but most people's replies weren't much help. I'm keeping stock power with light mods (t28 on stock boost, FMIC, manifolds, exhaust, etc.)
The car is my daily driver and I only drift it on some occasions. I do have fun in the car, but I'm conscious of not beating on it too much, as it is a stock SR.
The choices I'm torn between now are all around the same price range, within a 100 dollars of eachother. I'm most curious about OEM Exedy Replacement clutch due to price, but not sure how it holds up to the occasional aggressive driving on stock power. Trying to stay away from stuff like XTD unless someone could vouch for them.
Exedy OEM Replacement
Exedy Stage 1
Competition Stage 1
Competition Stage 2
Would the torque increase for a Stage 1 Competition be worth it, bang for buck wise?
Any help as to narrowing this list down would be greatly appreciated.

Go stage 2. They aren't much in price and handle more power. I doubt you'd notice a change in drive ability until you go more aggressive.

Which one? Comp Stage 1?

Yeah, the price difference between the Stage 1 and 2 is about 120 dollars, so I really am wondering is that 120 dollars worth it, seeing as how I'm probably going to be stock for a while and I am on quite a stiff budget at the moment.

I am in the same boat as you shomo.
My clutch is basically gone, and I don't have a sweet budget. I really want to get the Comp Stage 2, but budget says get the OEM replacement for now.
My big problem is that I am running a KA that I just paid 600 to get it running.. :| no guarantee on how much longer it will be running. I will probably end up swapping it out sometime soon.
If I bought the Comp Stage 2, I would be able to resell it.. but if I bought the Exedy OEM it would probably be discarded with the engine.
Your thoughts?

Well I think in your case, it depends on how you'll be driving it. If it's just for daily driving on a stock KA, you would probably be fine with oem. I wouldn't get the stage 2 unless you planned on beating on it quite a bit.
I'm looking for longevity since I plan on keeping my SR for a while. That's why I'm so torn haha.

if youre worried about the engine going out and possibly discarding it, and for some reason along with the trans, per youre statement, just get a clutch from autozone.

shomo, Go with the comp stage 2 if you're going for longevity! No way should you go OEM. You'll be glad you did in the future.
I could order the Exedy OEM Stock Replacement online for the same as I could get a Duralast clutch from Autozone.
I am still torn between making my KA run, building it out, doing all the headwork, pistons, rods all the fun stuff. Even possibly boosting it. Or going all the way and putting a 2JZ in it.

in my opinion if longevity and reliability is what you are looking for, i would run the comp1 and why i say that is bc you plan to give it a run every now and then. that and if you ever decide to run it harder more often you wont have to question if the clutch can take the abuse. i advise if you are upgrading the clutch to upgrade your flywheel as well or at least have your current flywheel resurfaced! if you do not resurface the flywheel your not going to have a good time.

In for Exedy Stage 2. I'm using it on my stock SR with no regrets. Can be a tad rough for dailying at first, but you get used to it.

You mentioned XTD, I have a stage 3 F1 ebay clutch in my car that cost $120 and it works fine. ~330 whp, 4th gear clutchkicks and stock pedal feel. Previous to this I had an F1 stage 2 in my stock ka and that never slipped or chattered either.
