View Full Version : Drive shaft support not lining up

So I was trying to install the drive shaft on my 89 240sx, and when I go to put the support bracket that goes around the center bearing, it's not lining up. At all. Is there a trick to doing this that I'm not getting? I have the drive shaft jacked up and into place in the diff and tranny. I'm not very experienced with working on cars either, bit of a noob.

Too far back? Too far forward? Upside down?

It's too far back, towards the rear of the car.

It needs to go further into the trans. Probably don't have the yoke aligned right.
Push and turn.

looks like you have the mount on wrong. flip it around and it should bolt up. its a p.i.t.a but it will bolt in.

Is it on wrong or is it the wrong part of the mount? It's got 2 pieces, a more round one and one that's more straight I guess you could say. I tried to push it into the trans more and it'll turn about an eighth of the way and stop, and doesn't push anywhere

Should the bearing also line up with the holes for the bracket?

You might be able to get play or movement in the engine and trans mounts, even the brackets which mount to the engine from the actual mount, you can play around with all of them and you should be fine. Unbolt and pull the engine forward, or push the engine trans forward, there should be enough play to line everything up with ease.

Is this a swap? SR.... auto>manual.... trans replacement...

That'll probably work, but I'm not about to try to move my engine. Still a newbie with cars.

Kind of. Just a KA24DE swapped into the 89 shell. And it was an auto to manual swap. Is the drive shaft the wrong one? Could I have the wrong year for it?

It's possible you have a s14 driveshaft. The carrier bearing is off slightly between s13/s14
If that's the case contact TreHarris on az240sx.org
I know he's looking for a s14 driveshaft and has a spare s13 driveshaft.

I hit him up, I'll post what happens tomorrow. Whether it was the wrong d/s or if I'm still doing something wrong.

Auto/manual driveshafts are different, same with abs/non-abs and s13/s14

If he has the wrong chassis shaft, it wont even be that close.

This is what it probably is, using an auto shaft on his manual.

how is he cramming an automatic yolk into a manual transmission?
I think its just the abs/non-abs mixup. Look how close it is? thats less than an inch of difference, kind of like going non-abs to abs huh?
just a guess
its not a S14 DS because those have a completely different center bearing placement (it would be blatantly obvious)

Abs/non abs are 3/4" difference and affect mounting to the diff, not the bearing

looks backwards, thought upside down too, but looks correct that way... I know mine was a pain in the butt to align, loosen trans mount a few turns to make it easy to move.... I fixed mine with a single piece driveshaft ;) lol

so, are you saying that if he unbolted the DS from the differential, that the center bearing would not instantly line up?
In other words, would the yolk jam into the transmission so far that it could go NO further, and still be misaligned at the center bearing?
IN FOR SHOTS OF THE YOLK AT THE TRANS!

^ and I think we all missed that lol..... Is it bolted to the diff already? if not, same dust cap as in the sr maybe? I have used non abs ds on abs diff... it worked, not ideal, but worked
