OEM parts worth the price?

I need a new clutch slave and master cylinder for my s13. Autozone sells them for $14.99 and $17.99. OEM parts will cost $40 and $86. Would it be worth paying that much extra for the OEM parts? I got those OEM prices off CourtesyNissan.com but I'd imagine prices would be similar at dealerships here (and if not I could just order them on courtesynissan).

I think the ones from Autozone might be remanufactured. Ask them at the counter. The OEM will be new.

I wouldn't pay $40 for a slave cylinder. Generic parts will work. You need OEM for critical stuff like oil and fuel filters, alternators, AC parts, engine accessories.

another alternative is getting the nissan repair kits... i think its $15 for the m/c repair kit and $6 for the s/c. if u do it yourself, at least u'll know it was remanufactured properly.

I have never bought any of that crap OEM. The reman stuff is just fine. Yes, you will occassionally get something that doesn't measure up, but you can get bad OEM parts too. I've never bought an OEM filter...what a rip! And it's inconvenient to get them too! I just mosey into my LAPS and buy some Mobil 1 and a Mobil 1 filter. Works great. Same for the fuel filters. Alternators? You buy OEM ones? Man, send me some of your money. Do you buy OEM brake pads and drive belts too? What about Nissan brake fluid and coolant? :duh:

Geesh.

Go buy the cheap parts and send me the money you just saved.

Yes, OEM belts should also be used. Fluids are generic, but I also like Mobile 1 oil. The Mobil 1 oil filter costs more than the OEM but might be a worthwile upgrade. I haven't tried it yet. I get cheap autozone brake pads 'cus I've got the 26mm Z32 rotors up front that tend to warp. I end up replacing the pads before they are worn out 'cus I have to get the the rotors turned. I reccomend aftermarket pads like Metal Matrix if you want ones that last a long time. Autozone alternators are crap. Maybe I've just had bad luck, but the extra money for OEM is worth the labor I save having to repeatedly replace crappy alternators with lifetime guarantees.

Or, enjoy using cheap shit and let people use what they want to use. The only items that come from autozone on my s13 would be: starter, alternator, some fluids. I use OEM gaskets, belts, filters, master/slave cylinders, etc etc.. most of the stuff on my car is OEM. Why? Because just about everything you get from autozone and pepboys is absolute trash. My saying is that they come with a "lifetime warranty" because you'll spent a lifetime changing the parts.

OEM baby.. its the way to go. I mean, have you even seen how shitty the aftermarket belts are compared to the OEM ones? They're dry and loud, they suck ass.

Depends on the aftermarket belts. Dayco belts are the industry standard. My car has Dayco belts, they're quiet and they work great.

I gotta agree with old_s13 today since I've had a lot of so-so experiences with non-OEM stuff that claims to meet or exceed oem standards as they say. Nissan OEM is pretty good, since all I've had are Nissans. The parts performed as they should and caused no problems, especially in the LONG RUN. many of you may claim to have no probs at all, and that's great. On average though, you can't get much better parts for maintenance than Nissan OEM.

I have non-oem slave cylinder and still works fine (w/ many clutch kicks)...($11) but the company that distributes them uses OEM cores, and rebuilds them to better than OEM specs... it didn't come from auto-zone. That's all I can say. YEAH, go support your local small parts shop, they're the ones who will get you good stuff if you want to save money.

how can it be BETTER than OEM specs? its not science, the slave cylinder is just a single piston that pushes on the clutch fork. SO, is it any different than OEM? if so, how is it better? take both apart and show full comparison pics.

when shopping for master cylinders, i got a chance to compare cheap aftermarket with expensive aftermarket, and then.. with OEM. So, I saw the difference in quality. The cheap one was made very shoddily. The more expensive one was basically a remanufactured OEM unit.. and of course, new OEM is exactly that.

They can use better than OEM quality seals for the rebuild, and match the tolerances tighter between the piston and the bore...

I'm about to get new OEM belts because the ones I bought from Autozone keep stretching and slip all the damn time. Gates belts are awesome belts but they don't have them there. For alternators I'd go with OEM too, my brother has replaced too many on his Lexus with remanufactured ones. For gaskets I would go with OEM for most but Felpro is a really good gasket company and they do make a headgasket for our cars, for that it would probably whatever is easier to get. I don't think anyone uses OEM fluids....I sure don't. For filters I go to boards and ask around to see what is good. Right now I'm using K&N's for Oil and Air and they're workin pretty good.

On a side note for oil filters, some manufactures had FRAM oil filters stock(relabled with the appropriate OEM badge). Would that be better than "cheap" aftermarket stuff? Well, it still depends, they were made in two different factories, and for one reason or another one was better than the other.

FRAM is crap. Check on the page below. There is an actual forum for just oil analysis. They're very meticulous about every detail. They gather tests from Blackstone laboratories and prove or disapprove of oil filters.

OEM is tubular...Everything on my car is OEM and is working great. Crap oil filters are only good if u change the oil every 900km...Same with crap oil(when i was breaking in the rebuilt engine). I just feel much better with some OEM stuff knowing that there was millions put into it by Nissan. Even thought they somehow manage to make timing chain guides out of plastic at first... :rl:
