View Full Version : I think Im turning into a boostaholic :(

3 weeks ago whenever I finished my KA-T, set the boost to about 7psi..
Man.. the car pulls and it felt really fast...
Now, I've noticed that the car doesnt seem to be fast anymore to me...
I punched it, went up to like 120mph today coming home from work... but still.. I didnt feel like the car pulls that hard anymore..
Is this because of the car is actually getting slower... Or is it because Im used to it already?
But last time (last week) I did a pull with my buddy's 14psi SR+boltons, we were dead even.
One thing I noticed now is that the ka-t felt too restrictive in the upper RPM. This if probably because im still running stock 2 inch exhaust. I dont know how a 3 inch exhaust will help but I'll found out soon whenever my exhaust is here (early next month).
I dont know... I'm going to turn up the boost to 9psi this weekend and see how that'll feel. Can't wait to get my car dynoed eventhough Im not that optimistic... according to my butt dyno today, I should prolly make close to 200rwhp... :(
If all of this is because Im already used to it, then the myth about "once you go turbo, you're going to be a boostaholic (you want more and more boost)" is true.
Sorry for the long post... I just had to spit it out..
I wonder if any of you felt the same way with either your sr, ka-t, rb, etc..

The exhaust will free up a ton of power. Especially up top, where your engine is trying to push a ton of air and the exhaust system is having a ham sandwich instead. I'd wait to turn it up to 9psi until you get your exhaust because the gains won't be as large as when you get your exhaust.
good luck.
Odds are that your car isn't getting slower, you are just getting used to it.

you know, they have a website for people like you....
;)
You are going on 1 of 2 paths
1. Crank up the boost and mod the engine till there is no tomorrow or blow the car
2. Crank up the boost, mature a little, lower back the boost and be happy with the power output!
;) 2nd path takes a few months... :)

Just wondering, how it your mani holdin up. With a stock exh. and not-so-good welds (i think you said that) wouldn't it make the mani take even more abuse from heat if you turned up the boost? I'm reading Maximum Boost right now so I'm in the process of learning the turbo system well. I already know a bit from here and FA but this book is awesome.

exhuast is one of the biggest restrictions with any turbine boosed engine. you definately won't be disappointed when you get your bigger exhaust!

its because you are in texas, land of going straight.
if you drove the car in the canyons you'de probably have more in your hands than your capable of handling.

there is nothing wrong with wanting more boost, Boost is a drug..Sorta...like everyone said once ya free up the exhaust then you will feel it. Hell my buddy with a civic turbo B16B i belive? was pushing around 580hp or so..29 PSI of boost, he would always tell me he needed more boost i dont know its just a thing you need once you have it.

everything seems to hold pretty good.. even the manifold... the coating has started to chip off but thats expectable.
Im not really afraid of blowing up the motor.. Im more worried about small stuff like Injector leak, oil leak, coolant leak, exhaust leak, vacuum leaks.. etc
but I agree with mike too.. most roads are straight and pretty open down here
I havent tried canyon run (about 2 hours from here) since turbo.. might want to try that too sometime
Like for example, today my car wont start... seems like the battery went out (the greatness of lawnmower battery), but im going to check if i have somesort of shorts or blown fuse somewhere..
It ran and started normally last night.. i dont know what happen, maybe a gerbil got into my car and cut some wires..
oh well..

number for a KA-t, 50 lb msd's cobra maf, jwt ecu 3 inch with no cat, 12psi i made 301 hp to the tires and 319tq. last summer. im making more now but adding the 3 inch made spool up instant and a crap load more tq. i ran it with no exhaust just 3 inch downpipe. i made and extra 28 hp. exhaust is a huge factor with turbo's. hope this helps you a little.

Interesting... 28 hp with no exhaust...
Anyways, are you still rocking the KA with stock internals? what kind of turbo do you have?

i was pretty impressed with the ka-t. i previous car was stolen and i didnt have the money to start from scratch but i bought a about-to-be-blown s13 kat and it had 120 compression on 3 cyl's. it would boost to 11 but slow drop down to 7. and it had shitty/small intercooler piping running to a starion FMIC but was tuned and nice t3 turbo and ran against a evo8 boosting 22pounds but im now anxious to get my car back from the machine shop and see the power it puts down, never really cared about making shit load of power just to take it sideways and its a sexy ass car coming from a h22civic hb<-- having that car stolen was the best thng- alot of work down the drain but i got a 240 need i say more

man, i need boost bad. Another couple of weeks and it should be reality. Although the exhaust feels good and back fires at times, but it would be nice to see how the turbo complete the car.
Yes yes yes, I have a website for people like you!
Still new though...

i would be kinda afraid to even start the car up with stock exhaust. i always see people with turbos and stock exhaust and it makes me cringe to think at what stress that turbo is under. especially with the ka since it was never meant for that. get some 80mm with a test pipe and shoot some flames.

Or get a high-flow cat, keep the flames out, and still breath.

3 1/4 off the turbo on my car, stock ehxaust is WAY to restrictive. Get the GReddy Power Evolution 2. I love it, GREAT sound.
