I was wondering, do aftermarket LSDs tamper with streetability? I am talking about 2-way Viscious or mechanical type LSDs (I dont like cluth type). I heard aftermarket LSDs are loud.. I dont care about that. What I am concerned about is a harsh ride. I heard that good aftermarket LSDs (like a Tomei advance trax 2-way) will give a harsh ride unless you are putting down serious power. I want to put an aftermarket LSD on a stock 240.. am I an idiot?

Yes.

PS. Go to www.howstuffworks.com and look at differentials.

i don't notice the noise, my exhaust covers it up. the only time i hear it is when i'm turning with the windows down and stereo off =)

and 90% of the time i forget that its there.

since this has brought up... how about doing parallel parking with a 2-way lsd ?

what does that have to do with having a 2way?

It should have little/no effect. The LSD works on torque, and as such has minimal presence in low speed driving (which I -hope- is how you parallel park). This is why we don't just weld our open diffs or run solid axles.

just get a VLSD, but before that, do some research so you know how incorrect most of the info in your post was.

no need for anything more than a vlsd on a street driven stock 240. only clutch type LSDs come in 1, 1.5, and 2-way. tomei is a clutch type. LSD won't affect the ride at all, they can be loud, and agressive ones make the car understeer or oversteer, that's it.

AFAIK Tomei only makes Clutch type LSDs (which are also, technically, "mechanical.") Clutch pack LSDs don't give a "harsh ride" at all, all they do is give you a little extra noise when taking turns, a pain in the ass changing diff oil, and a little bit of exit speed. How much power you have makes no difference; the LSD will work the same.

There aren't, as far as I've heard, any aftermarket viscous LSDs, and there are very few aftermarket gear-type (helical) LSDs. The few that exist are probably made by Peloquin and Quaiffe. (sp?)
Stock 240s with LSD had viscous, while stock Miatas, RX7s, Silvia S15s and others came with helical (gear-type) LSDs. A few domestics back in the day came stock with clutch type, which is why GM/FORD stock LSD clunk-reducing fluid, which I buy.

Why do you want an LSD? That sounds like the first matter you need to straighten out.
