Anyone have any tips for this install. I am planning to use George's swap kit. Pretty much after i get the kit all i know is that I have to cut the shifter area a couple inches and wire in a dakota for the speedo. Anything else that I should consider. I.E.- clutch type, fitment issues, bearing carrier etc. Any experienced information appreciated. What kit did others go with. personal experiences are welcome as well.

With the non HR trans, you should have no issues if you use george's kit. You retain the sr clutch and pressure plate etc. If you have an later model HR transmission, you will need a throw out bearing spacer that George started making because it uses an internal slave cylinder. Don't forget you'll need a transmission mount made as well.

I've just finished doing mine.

Using George's/Maverick Motorsports plate, you need Z33 fork & slave, but S14 Release/Throwout bearing & Carrier. Some people seem to have issues with multi-plate clutches as the splined section of the input shaft is shorter than the S14 box.

Other than that, I made a custom crossmember that retains SR20 gearbox mount, custom shifter bracket. Cut the tunnel about 2 inches rearward and made a blanking plate to seal it up.

I don't know about S14 tunnel, but my 180SX is tight. Clutch is now an engine out job haha.

For those looking for a simple speedo option. I'm about to buy one of these Autometer GPS Speedo things. Outputs to OEM speedo perfectly.

That is a build thread that goes in many directions. I have seen that and I'm sure others have as well. This will hopefully simplify a search and summarize everyones experience for the next person interested in doing this swap.

I was looking at that as well. Reason is i have heard that although Dakota is good it starts to fall at anything above 30mph. No actual experience with it myself though

My reasoning behind getting it is that I run a non-ABS diff.

Ordering it tonight, so hopefully see how it works soon.

Apparently Georges trans mount doesn't work. How did you modify the trans x member? Did you use the s13/s14 and mod it or did you use the z33 trans x member and modify it?

I am doing this swap right now using the Collins Performance plate, I am almost complete and have been snapping pics/taking notes along the way..

The Z33 trans is MUCH bigger than SR/KA in the area right where the trans mount bolts to in the trans tunnel, so that extra piece of metal needs to be hammered back a bit, and even then it seemed kind of tight. I ended up filing a bit of the side of the case off as well as hammering the chassis to buy a little bit more room.

Also the bell housing needs to be trimmed to fit a factory style bottom mount o2 housing 3 bolt flange.

And on the shifter, I bought a McKinney bracket, and ended up shortening the shift linkage even further (take the linkage off the selector rod of the trans, cut the bracket closest to the trans off, and cut the extra material out of the end piece that the alignment pin fits in, weld that portion directly to the bracket. Then I made a new bracket for the other side directly underneath the shifter rod and moved the bolt forward within the new bracket a few MM, so between doing that and knocking the extra material off the front of that piece that goes to the selector rod I was able to shorten up the whole assembly, re-drilled the mount holes on the bracket itself, and trimmed the excess material off the front.

Here is how the linkage sits now in neutral.

I am probably going to end up cutting the top of the trans tunnel off, moving that hole 1 1/2'' or so back, re welding it, and then dog legging the shifter itself forward so the rubber insulator still fits, and then the shifter itself will come through the factory leather boot.

Also on the clutch line, due to how the slave cylinder mounts and the downpipe, I ended up flipping an ISIS auto to manual line so that the straight end is on the master, and the 90 is on the slave, and angled the 90 forward so it is away from the ground and also the downpipe

Are they needed for s14? I cut the clips off my sr trans but I don't have the clips from the z33 side of things so I left then disconnected. While not having reverse lights is inconvenient. It's not really an issue for a non daily driver.
