I was just wondering becasue I thought I read in the manuel not to use synthetic oils. I've always used mobil 1 with my new cars though and really like it. Right now I'm not using anything great on my ka. Just that "high mileage" kind from quaker state I believe. I'd like to use synthetic though.
So what do you use?

The guy that I bought my car off of, said that they they had a lot of failures with mobil 1 and castrol synthetics. He said to use either red line motor oil or valvoline synthetic motor oil if you could not get the red line. That came from the guys that he associates with over at enjuku. Supposively, that's what the told him and that's what he told me. So I don't know, me I'm going to use redline motor oil, just to be on the safe side.

I don't know how much this means, but I used 5w30 or 10w30(depending on season) Castrol Syntec (full synthetic) in my s14 from 130K miles when I bought it to the 220K miles it then went into storage, and that car went through hell in a flaming handbasket and back. Kissed the limiter regularly while drifting and drove 4hrs at 75mph + almost every other weekend plus the more than occassional drag race. Never had a hiccup, not so much as a puff of smoke out the tailpipe. Compression is good at that. Also had a magnet on the oil plug and never showed anything out of the ordinary.

Right now I'm just using some cheap Valvoline 5w30. Next time I change my oil I'm thinking about trying that Royal Purple oil. I've heard good things about it. It's full a synthetic oil. Anyone had any experience with this oil? And what are the advantages/disadvantages to using a higher viscoscity oil? Like a 15w30 vs. a 5w30?

VLSD - Mobile 1
Just like dousan, just switched around. I would of got redline for the VLSD, but that was a long time ago while I was still thinking like: "damn that shits expensive, lets just get this" But I'm happy with the mobil 1 so Im not going to waste my time changing it. I get my Redline off of ebay, in 12 quart packs, Its around 65$ shipped, but you still save about 10$-20$. It great the recomended oil changing intrevels are 10,000 to 17,000 miles. yes thats not a typo. I still change my oil at 4k though. Now for a question of my own , whats a good oilfilter?

I'm interested to hear what kind of failures were caused by Mobil 1 and Castrol Syntec. I have heard nothing but good things about these oils.
Personally, I use Castrol GTX 20w50.

I use Redline 10w30 and a K&N Oil Filter. Works pretty good. Less audible ticking from the engine. I might do a UOA(used oil analysis) on it when I get to the 3rd oil change on redline. I'm going to be changing it at 5k intervals.
My car was run on Mobil 1 10w30 all it's life at 3k intervals and the compression is 180 for all four cyl. Runs great, I just decided to switch to Redline because I'm harder on the car and I take a several 24hr (straight) trips in a year.

Yeah, that's what the guy told me. I could not believe it either when I heard it, I was thinking to myself this is :bs: but i'm just going to use redline with either an OEM filter or K&N one. Plust this guy wanted these tires back after I got other ones, and there is no tread left on them at all!! :tweak: :mepoke: :loco: :wtf:

Mobil 1 = 10w30 very good motor oil,
also look at penzoil's complete synthetic with pensoline or seomthing like that in it its supposed to be very good.

From what I've heard Fram filters suck, Purolator are very good(by experience on this one) especially for the money. I think the K&N is only marginally better but it's only a couple bucks so I might as well get it.
AKADriver
06-14-2004, 12:05 AM
K&N is worth it if only for the convenience.
TheSnail
06-14-2004, 12:11 AM
Fram Does suck, I just stick with the OEM one. Nissan designed them to work with each engines charicteristics. All other filters just "fit" and Fram just "sucks" despite there cool little griping thing. If I was to use any other filter , it would be K&N.

Castrol GTX 10W-30, Fram filter cause theyre readily available and cheap for me, plus the grip is handly. ill likely change this eventually though.

I dont know about fram, some people might just bash it because of its brand name, But I heard honda oem filters are fram, and those engines dont last long right........
AKADriver
06-14-2004, 01:05 AM
People bash Fram because they use cardboard and plastic where they should use metal (and where most everyone else uses metal) in the construction of their filters.
That sort of thing is typically not an issue in a street engine, but once you take your car to the track, with extended runs at high RPM, all that oil pressure for a long duration can cause the Frams to leak internally.. and even cause you to lose some oil pressure.
Sure, you can run an Accord on the street for 300,000 miles on a Fram filter, but the fact remains that their stuff is the very low end of name-brand parts.

i use OEM filter + mobil 10w-30. i've also run the purolater pure 1 filter.
i've also heard bad bad things about the fram filters. there was a very long review of OEM and aftermarket filters done independently. you can find it on google.

When i had my KA i just used 5w-30 or 10w-30 castrol GTX dino oil or Castrol Synthetic blend (which ever was availible). From 8 miles to 104,000 miles. Not a single problem.
For my sr i use mobile 1 10w-30 that i buy at costco for 23.95 a 6 pack. I've used that oil for about 15,000 miles (change every 2500-3000) for the last 2 years, not a problem.
Always though i use OEM oil filters only because i buy them at a discount in bulk.

Mobil 1 10w30 with a mobil 1 filter.
Redline MTL in trans and diff.
Gonna switch to Royal Purple possibly since I found a local place that sells it..
The Mobil 1 oil filter's are $$$. Like $12 a fliter. I guess they are made to filter their own oil but maybe I should try the oem filter to save a few bucks....

Mobil 1 oil is great. I've heard the redline claims from redline DEALERS. Mobil 1 filters are made by Wix. So, you can buy a wix filter for alot cheaper.
I stoped using fram filters when they started putting teflon(PTFE) in them. I have cut most of the brands (fram, wix, purolater) open when I had the 'Stang. I think the Pure One had the most/thickest pleats and a much better constuction.

the blue Puroletor Pure One filters are pretty good... i run those usually, and they are only $5. look online, you can find alot of tests, it ranks only behind K&N (twice as much) and the Mobil 1 filter (three times as much, and i cant find it.) but besides that:
Engine: Mobil 1 10w30
Tranny: Mobil 1 75w90
Diff: Mobil 1 75w90
i trust Mobil 1, only thing id rather use is Redline. another thing, ive used Amsoil in my tranny before, it was really nice. it was bright blue! :) it stopped my old tranny from grinding...
