...well, not what you imagined.

i'm just passing the time in 3d studio

i'm building the head now... it's a bitch!

i've also completed the CAS (not seen here)

left to do:
a whole lot of things! oh well...:werd:

3d printed valve cover, hmmm I wonder if it would hold up.

aga
03-12-2014, 07:22 AM
the price would blow your mind. as an experiment i made an intake manifold for a toyota starlet, which is a lot smaller than an SR/RB, and the cost to print it in plastic, was around 700 $

of course you can make a mold out of it, so as a production value, its not much, but still...

edit: i remembered the stainless steel cost, was around 2200$

Jeez, that is a lot. Still though it kinda of gives hope of what could be made later on.

I can see a potential business in custom interiour pieces. For instance, a factory radioz bezel with a built in gauge pod piece that houses gauges of certain sizes and has holes in the back for them to plug into.

Or HVAC pieces under the dash

aga

yeah i ve thought of that, i used to make a lot of fiberglass parts, from gauge pods to bodykits, and i've thought of printing some in 3d , finishing them with some sanding, primer, and making a mold out of them. i even build a ghetto 3d scanner, and when i'm not bored, im gonna scan the dashboard i have in my balcony to do some work

i have a problem though:
i'm bored, generally.

i blame the internetz

i need one but not willing to pay what people are asking for em'! and a brand new one would be awesome even if it were made of fiberglass.

I can almost bet the amount of money it would cost him to make you could buy 3.

I can't wait to download car parts to a 3d printer.... in 15 years.

Do a laser scan of the individual parts and build them in a 3D model- done. Did you model these from a photo conversion or from scratch? Looks good

aga
03-13-2014, 12:29 AM
everything modeled from scratch

i could scan the parts, but i need the engine IN the car. :P

i've made a mold of the coil pack cover cause i wanted to make a carbon fiber one, but i'm not sure if i wanna cover the coils anymore so i pretty much abandoned that project... but now that i have a vented hood i might get back at it.

5820verdet: jay leno has a 3d printer in his garage and his mechanic reproduces any part he can't find anymore for fixing up his rare cars... and thats years ago. if you re a tinkerer, you can use even the cheapest 3d printer, and with some post-work you can make a mold-ready part. after that, you can make a fiberglass mold, a sand mold for pouring aluminium, or whatever. but that's for people who have a LOT of time in their hands.

3d printers are popping up all over and getting cheaper as time goes on. My local library has one and you can print whatever you want, just pay $.08 an ounce for the material.

very impressive! are you using some sort of Farro arm for the measurements?

what kind of material are you suing to create this from the 3-d printer. Since you said you want to make a valve cover.

also you can change some inputs to reduce the sanding to no sanding. well depends on the CAD program you are using.

no measurements, just my eyes.

i'm making this for my own amusement, if i'm gonna 3d print something, its gonna be a tiny one, as an ornament for my desk.

also its not made in a cad program, that would be ...easier :) (also i dont know cad )

it's made in 3ds max.

There are several types of metal 3d printing now too... cost prohibitive and not strong enough to use on engine parts though. As far as I know right now it's mainly being used for custom architectural features (like cabinet pulls, faucet handles, etc.) Hopefully in the future we will have the ability to do one off engine parts this way though.

OP let me know if you want it printed small scale if you don't have access to a printer. I have a desktop printer and would love to print one for myself too...

also photos of the head, intake side (vtc head) are welcome!

thanksssss

It looks better than a real engine...

The place where the starter goes on the left side looks off for some reason.

aga

finished the left side and the back of the head. i know the back is wrong but i would have to redo a lot of stuff to make things fit properly and i was bored.

building the oil pan now, too bored to make the rear end of the engine. also, photos of a dismantled s14/15 manifold are welcome! :D especially around the injector area

The fact that you're doing this by eye is amazing, I wouldn't even know where to start.

Think you could share the one paragraph version of how you go about doing this?

aga
04-27-2014, 01:39 PM
thanks. well, i have made my share of mistakes , some because when googling for reference photos you never know what you re gonna get. so i mistakenly made the intake runners on the head from an s13 (highport) and some other things. the ones i caught, i fixed. anyway, instead of writing you how i do it, how about this:

Dude, that almost looks real. Just don't forget to finish welding the collector on the turbo manifold.

aga
04-30-2014, 04:10 AM
thanks guys. yeah i think i'm gonna remake the whole manifold... after it's done i'm gonna make a version with turbo-intercooler-bov and piping cause i have those ready.

aga
04-30-2014, 04:22 AM
actually i have a dash in my balcony, and a 3d scanner i made myself, i wanted to use 3d data from the dash to make a custom gauge pod but i havent gotten around it.

i ve been making dash pods for a while with fiberglass etc, but thats a time consuming and dirty work. i'm too old for this sh*t :D...time to have it printed for me. then just some finishing work and its gonna be ready for molding. with 3d printing you can even have the leather grain of the dashboard to match (well, just a little bit of polishing , will be needed)

I shed a tear when I laid my eyes on these photos. This is a work of art, words can't describe the level of detail on these models. It's also refreshing to see how nice the engine came from the dealer. All I can imagine is opening up the hood of a brand new s14 and seeing this.
