I know there aren't many options but lets compile what we have so far.
Feel free to post whatever I miss and Ill add to original post. Also corerect me if parts are discontinued or incorrect.

There is the definitive lighting thread somewhere around here but that deals mostly with modification not really off the shelf parts. Gabe I remember you pm'd me a while back about a headlight retrofit and I'm still here if you decide you want to go that route :)

lol Junyan manufactures 99.9% of all aftermarket lighting. Even the ones sold by Vertex or DMAX. They're all Junyan! All aftermarket lighting is virtually the same so just buy the cheapest one you can find on ebay. The only thing that isn't the same is custom stuff like Clearcorners.com makes.

That's good info!
I guess the list is good for people wanting to shop by brand...?
Also I assume more reputable companies will have better return/customer service in case of damaged/faulty lights.
So the same $200 ebay crystal clear light is the exact same as Vertex lights?
no difference whatsoever??

Where do I find the Kouki clear lense (Supermade?) I have a retrofitted headlight set up and want to swap my glass for the clear plastic. Or clear glass, but I don't believe that is available.

I am sorry I could have sworn I saw a link with the Super made headlight covers from a japanese website having a hard time finding it now.
but the Circuit sports one I saw from Ebay was missleading:
FrontCircuit Sports Clear Head Lens Cover Nissan 240SX S14 95 96 97 98 Silvia Front
but when you click on it it says Zenki only :(

I've heard rumors that Vertex uses better sealants to prevent water or condensation from getting in their lights, but no one has ever proven this. They are most likely identical so I'd just go with the cheapest ones. You can reseal them on your own fairly easily if you run into any problems anyways.

Aftermarket plastic are very cheap quality, easily scratched, and eventually will turn yellowish faster then oem.
I would not run anything aftermarket unless the car is a track car and I don't care about it smashing into the wall.
As for choices of aftermarket, they are all the same not much difference in look wise.
Mike at clear corner does clean mods on oem ones.
If I were you I would run custom JDM one modify by mike and for tail lights I would buy brand new ones from Nissan.
Can never go wrong with oem quality

You have to buy the spyder lights and remove the plastic and retrofit it on the oem lights if u want clear lights

yep thats exactly what I am doing with my RX330 retro. I am also worried about the long term quality of the plastic lens. A clear coat might help. Otherwise, just get good at polishing them.

The main issue is we kouki retrofitters need clear plastic lenses. Lots of them.
If somebody would manufacture about 20 sets for 60 shipped/each it would hold us off for a while and make alot of people very happy.

I made some kouki clear lenses a while back.... They didn't fit well unlike the zenki ones I made which fit perfect. The reason is I used the oem glass lenses as male molds instead of casting and preparing my own molds from the lenses.
But... the reality is, like oem lenses, the clear ebay ones are made of PET so they can withstand impact. Unforunately this material is not very UV resistant and that's why they degrade. They do yellow quicker than OEM lenses because the UV protective coating isn't as durable and wears off quicker, but they are made out of the exact same material so when that protective coating is gone you're pretty screwed.
Since my current kouki clear lenses are beginning to fade I plan to use them to make molds so I can form high impact acrylic replacements for retrofitting purposes (mainly for myself, but others if they ask too). Acrylic is nice because it's much more UV stable and will last much longer if kept outside. No, it's not as resilient to impacts though, so that's the downside. It could be a few months before I get this project in the works...

I'll wait for you to make the lenses. I don't care much about impact, if they were glass and got hit hard enough they'd prompt immediate replacement so whatever.

02-28-2014, 08:18 PM
PET? No.
Modern headlight lenses are made of PC, which has high impact/chip resistance. The same cannot be said for acrylic, which is not suitable for headlight lensing.
Here we have GLASS headlights (for the kouki) and you guys are complaining? Thats like a car coming stock with RAYS wheels and you guys wanting ROTA.
How do I cancel my account on Zilvia?

I was always under the impression headlamp lenses were PETG not PC but I stand corrected. I know PMMA is used for sidemarkers and taillamp lenses and thus they have much better UV resistance and so I've had good luck using cell cast PMMA for forming custom headlamp lenses. Many have been fine going on 8 + years with only slight oxidation and no damage, only normal wear.
Personally I don't care for glass at all, not when retrofitting oem hid components into the kouki lights which is my only goal for this. The thick glass with the diagonal ridge through the middle has severe adverse affects on both the distribution of the light for down the road intensity/vision and also causes lots of glare vs. using a clear plastic front lens instead.

adverse to you does not mean adverse to everyone. the glass was adequate enough at the time when koito or ichikoh (cant recall who made them) at the time of creation, i dont see why they no longer suffice. just because forums are created where people nit-pick cutoff sharpness - that imo, has little to do with actual lighting performance.
imagine if the hellaflush fruits dictated what was right from wrong in terms of wheel & suspension setup. having a sharp and colorful cutoff is the equivalent of driving a slammed car with stretched tires.
the euro-spec mkiv supra and kouki s14 both came with glass headlights. i would pick glass ANY DAY over plastic. simply put, PC lenses require too much upkeep. oh well, what do i know. :-)

Three-fourths of the brands listed fall under the umbrella of Junyan. :)

I'm not just talking about cutoff sharpness, while that's somewhat important (at least to me) I agree it doesn't have a huge bearing on performance alone. However, the main problem lies with the thick glass lenses by how they actually change the dispersion of the light from the HID projector VS if the HID projectors were mounted behind clear plastic lenses (as almost all were from the factory I'm sure you know). What the glass lens does is wash out the important gradation of the light from just under the cutoff line to the foreground. Basically light from the important hotspot is "moved" to the foreground, meaning more of the light is put 20-50ft in front of the car rather than down the road 100+ft away.
Because these cars have headlights low to the ground it's very important to have an adequate hotspot just under the cutoff line from each projector for distance lighting as less of the light will be reflected back to the driver off of uneven road surfaces the lower the projector is mounted. (I know I don't really have to explain this to you ifix but to others reading along...)
What's interesting though if you play around with the kouki halogen lights in stock form is you will notice the glass front lenses are designed to work in tandem with the stock halogen projectors. If you fire up the halogen projector without the front lens in place you will notice there is basically no foreground light at all, it's all a very thin concentrated hotspot. The glass headlamp lens helps to "move" some of that light to the foreground when it's replaced on the housing. In this instance it's actually a good thing in my book because it makes it perform as you would expect a halogen projector headlight to.

Ichikoh made them.
The cut line on them is above the cutoff line on the projectors. You can cover the top part with your hand and see.
I would rather have them any day over some random curve plastic lenses. To expand on all the high end euro brands using glass and Euro Zenkis coming with glass.
The only errant light I have is from the squirrel catcher prisms in the center. I have the slots closed on my projectors so they do help throw some light off to the side.

On my HID projectors. This tab and slit is to throw errant light to light up signs and small woodland creatures on the side of the road. Bent it down to cover the slot for dat cutoff yo.

The halogens in the Kouki headlights were great for their time but technology has changed. The bowls in most factory projectors the bowl silver coating is faded, foggy or faded. They aren't curved for proper HID bulb parallax. So, I'm not running stock projectors.

Hey guys, sorry to zombify this thread but i didn't figure my question was worth a new thread. You guys have mentioned that the aftermarket plastic lenses are less durable and fade/yellow quicker than oem glass. I'm wondering if clear PPF (paint protection film) will prevent this? I've heard a coat of wax helps but I think this would be a little better for stone chips if it does in fact help fading/yellowing as well. Also, I'm assuming my hid kit for my usdm lights will work in an aftermarket set? correct me if I'm wrong here

You may get better responses in the definitive lighting thread. Glass lenses will not fade, but they can pit and break. I would not use clear film on plastic lenses if you have a projector retrofit, otherwise it's fine. just know it's a pain in the ass to remove if you ever want to.
