Hey guys im writing a letter to governer arnold swartsanegger (spelling i know i know) for my political science class. I need to bring up an issue and i decided to do it on car smog being reqired every two years. Does anyone have some good input on why we shouldnt have to smog our car's every two years? Just shoot some ideas that i can follow up with ...much appreciated. :hug: ha.

I think 2 years is fine.
Nothing wrong with clean air.

You should write about dismissing the visual test, if you pass the tail pipe, then its all good.

Ok im thinking now leaning towards the visual/ and CARB sticker battle. Why should we fail smog if we pass the test with illegal "non-carb" parts? If we past the test dosent that say that the aftermarket parts are meeting CA requirments? Or do you just want money arnold? Is that what you REALLY want? haha ok ok sorry but im leaning towards there once agian any info is much appreciated. and here some interesting tid bits i got from searching google and there car forums findings..Im not sure if some are true but im look into it. Just felt the need to post up...

Minnesota got rid of the smog inspection requirements a few years back after a study concluded it was a waste of tax payers' money.

Think about how much headache and tax payers' resources would be saved if California got rid of inspections like Minnesota did. Personally, I can't see every soccer mom in the state going out and cutting out all the emissions devices off their minivans

What really pissed me off about the whole emissions testing when I lived in San Diego was the fact that I had to jump through all the hoops to pass the test only to see cars drive across the border from Mexico dumping out more pollution than 20 cars put together

and some dude complaining that he passed with these readings...
Max allowable at 15 mph:
HC=112 (ppm) CO=0.72 (ppm) NO=778 (ppm).
Max allowable at 25 mph:
HC=86 (ppm) CO=0.60 (ppm) NO=717 (ppm).
My car came in at the following figures:
At 15 mph: HC=39 (ppm) CO=0.02 (ppm) NO=554 (ppm).
At 25 mph: HC=38 (ppm) CO=0.01 (ppm) NO=332 (ppm).
Now what does this tell you about the emissions in California?
I told the the man from the B.A.R. that this is all about money. He said: "I'll be honest with you, it is about money".

but failed the visual.due to parts that werent carb legal...

And here are some great links!~!!

ok this one is good i havent had a chance to finish reading it

and

if you havent been tehre already...JDM engines are legal as long as its functionally identical. Some honda owners have gotten away with this..But us 240sx owners are too cool for that ..gotta love the SR that never came.haha

Smog is a weak position, come to North Carolina and get your car smogged EVERY year and pay a $250.00 fine if you don't get it done in time

I met Arnold one day out in Mclean, VA. He was a prick. Of course myself and 3 other guys were parking cars for his party but when we got a break and he came out to get into his Enterprise rented Suburban we asked for a signature. The California Highway Patrol was there being the governor's "Security" pushed us out of the way as the governor said to me " No I have a plane to catch " Thanks dude. It prob would have taken 6 seconds tops for him to scratch his name on the back of a valet stub. :(

you should really write a letter about the Carb number BS. it's all a money game where the government makes a buttload of money off companies then the companies make a buttload of money off the consumers just cause they are carb legal... hence 160 bucks for a K&N AIR FILTER!!!!!<----- holy shit!

i have seen a few piss poor designs of products that i couldnt believe were carb legal. I guess the company paid someone off...

I am a smog tech and i can seriously say most of the visual test is BS. if your car runs clean, i dont care if your engine is on fire. You should pass smog.

Im done with the letter here it is. Im far from a decent writer so for any corrections/suggestions please shoot.Its due tonight but im actually sending the letter on monday with my new corrections. I left out my ass kissing (as encourged to do so) so you guys cant talk =P. But yea hope this changes the cali haha. yea

I am writing to you with concerning California’s current SMOG regulations. First of all I understand the importance of clean air and without a healthy environment we all have no future. I feel that the Executive Order parts are insignificant when determining if a vehicle meets California’s Air Resource Board standards. I found this listed on the California website pertaining to E.O. numbers, “If a part or modification is shown to not increase vehicles emissions, it is granted an exemption to emission control system and anti- tampering law”. Not too long ago I Smogged my vehicle and received these results:
Max allowable at 15 mph:
HC=112 (ppm) CO=0.72 (ppm) NO=778 (ppm).
Max allowable at 25 mph:
HC=86 (ppm) CO=0.60 (ppm) NO=717 (ppm).
My car came in at the following figures:
At 15 mph: HC=39 (ppm) CO=0.02 (ppm) NO=554 (ppm).
At 25 mph: HC=38 (ppm) CO=0.01 (ppm) NO=332 (ppm)
Now what concerns me is that I failed the visual part of the SMOG check. As I understand it the E.O. parts are proven to not raise emissions. If my vehicle can pass smog with plenty of room for error, I fail to see how these “illegal” parts are not meeting the California Air Resource Board standards. I feel that if a car performs to the Air Resource Board standards there should not be a need for a visual test. Perhaps a good compromise would be that a consumer could pay some kind of wavier for the modification(s) that were on the vehicle at the time it successfully passed the functional and tail-pipe tests. I ask that you please give this some consideration and perhaps a review of the current smog laws.

state the benefits from revamping the current system like, "free's up tax payers money" "spurs the economy by increasing sales on whatever" "you drive a hummer asshole so i want my god damn SR!!!!1`"
"own3d!~" "why your car failed the visual" and i would change how you worded some things. and put
p.s. if you don't change it we'll elect vin diesel as your replacement next election!

he wont even touch that letter... all that time wasted writing such a nice letter too. Seriously though, there's a lot more important things in the world to worry about than your smog check... such as funding for the california school system... I go to UC Davis and the raise in tuition is hurting me much more than the $50 that I pay for a smog check every 2 years...

Politics is about what's important to YOU.. just b/c on the grand scheme there may be more important things, doesn't mean YOU are any less important. Especially if YOU includes 100's or 1000's of other people that you get to also send letter's complaining.

The squeky wheel gets the grease.

In NC, they are doing away completely with visual AND tail pipe sniffer tests by 06'. OBDII testing only. The crap they pull in CA is BS, but it makes the govt money.. so it'll be hard to get them to change it. It's just like speed and stop light camera's. It's more for $$$ than anything, but they can hide behind the "improved safety" :rolleyes:.

Times not wasted, it was a school thing for poli-science class. Thanks for the nice letter remark hehe :D . I know there are more important things but i needed a write a letter fast and smog and eo crap was imo a good clean argument. A friend of mine wrote his about raised tuition, I told him that arnold is going to write back saying *in arnolds voice* "you want to learn you pay the price".haha

SO true sykikchimp. I know my letter isnt going to change it, I dont mean it too. But wow i feel good that i did something "constructive" with some of my day. I guess i just feel good when I write down my thoughts and opinions. I dont care if they do anything about it but it feels good to sit down, gather your thoughts, and write a argument (esp. when its something that affects you no matter how big or small). :w00t:

I'm too lazy to read all the post...so I will keep mine simple...

The geography of your state is horrid and conditions towards smog will because more strict in the times ahead......debate (or complain) about something else.

since you were too lazy i'll do a cliffs notes for you. We like clean air. Strict emissions standards are good. Visual inspection and EO numbers are all a money game and should be done away with.
