So the clear on the lips of my equips is hazy and worn off in some spots. I spent a couple hours reading refinishing tips trick and products to use. Well I've put two coats of stripped on for about 35 minutes total and still doesn't seem to be coming off. I used klean strip premium stripper from Home Depot. No one around had aircraft remover. Is this my problem? I mean I'm assuming it is. But maybe I'm not letting it sit long enough?

Well from what I read it would take probably over 10 hours to sand it all. Just seemed quicker to strip. Sand the scratches smooth then buff

did the paint stripper even do anything? if not, just wet sand the lip and buff it
also, the aircraft paint remover is very strong stuff, take the wheels off the car I know you have fresh paint.

That stuff sucks it didn't work for me either when I was lifting paint off my old meisters. I used the canned stuff with a picture of an airplane on it and it says aircraft stripper. It came off in 15 minutes. I have heard that companies are making a weaker solution now though to be environmentally friendly or some hippy crap like that.

No it basically did nothing at all. I was really confused. Welp maybe I'll try sanding now

Aren't those wheels chrome coated?

Assuming that's not chrome plating, there's not much I've seen that lacquer thinner won't strip?

All that work to do it wrong. Do it right the first time and get better results. Take the wheels apart don't half ass the job.

The faces are chrome plated. Lips are aluminum clear coated. Actually went ahead and hand sanded the lip. So far it came out great! And how is this half assed? My faces are in perfect shape. There is absolutely no reason to break the wheels apart... It's not like I'm doing a whole overhaul on them.

yeah it wont look show worthy, sure. but this isn't a show car. i drive it. so if you don't have any useful thoughts/help why bother posting? your opinion is clearly not necessary.

I was going to suggest you find someone that has access to proper industrial grade strippers. lol less chance of that eco friendly crap.

Thats not very strong thinner. You need the real deal paint stripper. Like aircraft stuff. All the stuff you get in stores now days are so watered down and crappy that they barely work on actual paint. The good stuff, you wipe it on and by the time you go all the way around the wheel, you will start wiping off the clear/paint/ etc.

Air craft stripper didn't work on my SSR Koenig/Koenig WRV's.

Easy off oven cleaner worked, but they look like shit after and need to be completely repolished

because its common sense.... you may not want to hear what people say, but its public critique and it comes whether we want it or not.

i dont understand why you would even bother with that shit without dismounting the tire at the very least. blue painters tape? for what purpose. its 5 times as expensive and only useful in applications where you do not want to delaminate the bottom layer of whatever you are painting.

i dunno, the way i see it is do it right or dont do it at all. you need to realize that clear is only as good as the area it seals. if it doesnt seal, water will get under it and it will lift.

honestly, i would have disassembled the wheels, polished the barrels and then clear powdercoated them or clearcoated them.

I used Klean Strip Aircraft paint stripper and it works great for removing clear coat. O'reilys carries this product. You could have gotten away with wet sanding the lips them polishing them after. I've done this with plenty of wheels I've owned, took my time and the results were great.

But since you started applying the stripper already you cant go back. Did it remove any of the clear coat off? Even a little bit?

I already started the stages of sanding them. They are coming out fantastic. Already got rid of a bunch of nicks and scratches smooth. They look way better than before. I'll post pictures up later. And like I said barrels and faces are in perfect shape so no reason to do all the extra work (dismount tires, balancing, unbolting them, unseal, reseal, let sit a day, bolt back together, remount tires) just so I can say the spot between the bolts are just as shiney... Maybe one day I'll be cool

I've used the Aircraft paint remover which worked the best, if you don't see anything being removed then it has no clear coat. The only thing I would recommend you from personal experience is to use compound/polishing bars with buffing wheels. I wet sanded from 400 grit all the way to 800 grit. After all the wet sanding was done I used brown tripoli compound on spiral sewn wheel, green compound on loose cotton wheel, and white polish on loose cotton wheel. My last step was using some Mothers polish but make sure to use new microfiber towels. Everything is listed from most aggressive to finest compound/polish.

Awesome! That's the kind of help I was looking for. Thanks bud! I was going to sand up to 1500. I'm at 600 grit right now. Do you have pics of yours?

No problem, of course the higher grit you sand the better results you will have. I achieved great result at 800 grit as my final wet sanding step since my wheels are OEM, I didn't really want to spend to much time on them. In your case I would sand all the way to 1,500 grit since you do have some baller ass wheels. I have a couple of pictures let me upload them, give me a few minutes.
