recently bought a 98 s14 ..
it came with a b&m shifter
this is the first car i own that has one so i dont know much about them
first issue is that it feels to go in hard compared to the stock one that my dad has in his s14 ... maybe normal idk
second issue .. at higher rpm it rattles .. extremely annoying ...
i was told that both issues are normal
and i have taken it apart and it look a little dry in there ..is it ok to grease the inside parts ?
i come from the aviation industry and we dont particularly like metals rubbing together with no kind of lubricant

Don't know if knowing that would help. Grease it up a bit man, helped me quite a bit with my short shifter. Also, it should be a bit more notch'y compared to stock if that's what you mean by hard to shift.

Ok I will grease it up ... Hard meaning you can feel it go into gear. Like it's notched in a way

Yeah, shifting is a lot more pronounced. Sorry I was replying and had forgotten what you said on your initial post. Good luck on the greasing, I'm going to be doing the same to mine again on Friday. :P

Try switching to an OEM bushing. Invest in a weighted shift knob, and replace the shifter springs in the transmission. This should eliminate most of the rattling issues. And of course greasing it up like others have stated.

Like Killer2001 said replace the bushing with oem, you can go solid but it wont fix that rattling issues, even with a new shifter spring kit solid bushings tend to make noise just from the vibrations.
oem bushing number is 32861-h7301
Hres a link to the spring kit I've used in the past. Worked great No problems.

as for the grease; white lithuim grease works great and lasts quite a long time

i actually JUST installed a BandM into my s14. to answer your question, yes they do come greases, but only at the center where the shift level meets the carrier plate.
Mine also makes a good amount of noise now, though I am using a solid shifter bushing. I tried greasing all of the parts in the shifter unit (springs, spring seats, and shifter bushing) , but it didn't help all that much.

you most likely have a version one B&M shifter, mine rattled like crazy on high rpms when i bought it back in 07, it still does...i upgraded to solid bushing and the rattle has gone away ( but not that much )

Its been awhile but I took the round piece on the rod off and put some rtv or silicone sealant in there. Replace round piece, no rattle, problem solved.

sry i took so long to reply .. gotta work to play right
but any ways .. i did grease it up a little
it was completely dry
my local s14 guru said i have the newer shifter ..
the rattling is a little better from just a little greasing
i have asked many people about this issue
guys who have replaced there springs and bushing with new is still having some rattling
so i dont think it will go completely away like the oem shifter
i was just wondering what are all the advantages of the short shifter
other than shorter throw
to me it feels there is alot of downsides to it
rattling ,not as smooth as the oem , and i notice myself placing the it in 3rd gear vs 1st at lights and in 4th instead of reverse
if its just me then short shifter are not for me
