But seriously, that's the breather hole. There should be a fitting pressed or screwed into it with a breather hose coming off of it. If my work computer wasn't so damned slow, I'd upload a pic of what it generally looks like.

It's a breather... so- UP is always good. I run mine up the top of the bell housing and have it ziptied facing vertical (Z32 TT Tranny)... The whole point is that you want to relive pressures/vapor, but keep moisture from ever getting in.

The factory hose comes with a bracket to hold it in place at the BH... As long as you get a nipple in there somehow, just run the appropriate sized hose from it and you will be fine. Make sure to run stout hose as underneath the car, it is subject to the elements all the time. Fuel line would always be a good choice... As would some 3-4 ply silicone hose.
