Hey guys, I'm quite new to the 240sx scene, i've read tons and tons of threads and tried to educate myself but i can't wrap my head around this one. I was just wondering how this leak may be happening? Could it be the valve cover gasket ?

Yeah that looks like the valve cover gasket, get a new one and some RTV and you should be good. I'd also wash the shit out of your engine bay and look for any more leaks.

Yeah i had a feeling it should've been that. I'll give it a try and see if that fixes the problem, thank you !

If you're changing the valve cover gasket, DO NOT use RTV.

How come ?

Also, do you guys recommend any aftermarket gaskets or should the OEM one do its job ?

OEM + rtv on the half moon part and you should be fine. While you're at it, replace the 4 spark plug gaskets also. Simple job, this should help you.

Because it's a rubber gasket. If there are any leaks, deterioration etc, you want to address them, not bandaid them with RTV.

OEM gasket is as good as it gets pretty much everywhere on the engine... They are made to last 100K+mi... Can't go wrong.

nissan fsm says to use rtv on the half moon part of the gasket. the rtv is required not a bandaid fix for the rocker cover gasket.

I stopped using RTV a long time ago, never had a single leak on the VC gasket.

As did I... However, I also had no idea that the FSM states to use it as RTV and rubber gasket used in conjunction with one another seems counterintuitive.

Therefore, I retract my original statement because following the FSM is pretty much the best way to go for general-type maintenance.

I only used RTV on the half moon parts only.
No leaks so far, it's been about a year since the maintenance.

Just use a little teeny bit of grey permatex. Most common noob mistake is overdoing the silicone.

The factory uses it there- but on engines where the valvecover constantly comes off (adjusting cam gears? adjusting valve lash?) You obviously wouldn't want to use any.

Dude, the FSM calls for RTV, pretty sure.

It's what glues the little circles in place.
