I'm just about ready to pull off my valve cover to drop in some '91 cams into my 96. Is it necessary that I use motor grease to coat the cams before they go in?
Also, how important is it that I put on new shims with the cams...If I don't install new shims right now can I run around for a short while (a week or so) before I pick up a new set of properly sized shims and install them?

The best thing to use is lithium grease, its made for that kinda stuff. Can be found in any auto parts store.

use engine assembly lube. try the redline stuff, it's quite strange to see metal soak up grease...but the regular stuff you can get at Kragen's is good too.

I just finished the installation of my cams...it was a bitch. I'm sure it wouldn't take most of you guys half as long as it took me. Previously, a coilover installation was the extent of my mechanical knowledge, so I didn't know much. But now that I think about it, it wasn't that difficult...what held me up was putting the last intake sprocket on my intake cam. I had a link bunched up on the idler gear and therefore had very little slack to work with, untill I found some help pushing down that damn tensioner. But everything's together now and it's alllll good.

i used lucas oil addative, really gooey, but i m using engine assembly lube next time when i rebuild my whole motor. the cams seem to be a drop in for alot of people, seems the shim is to correct for the head, not for the cams?, from the cam swap threads i have seen thats what i think.
